NEW YORK (AP) - President Bush, his first term shadowed by war, promised on Thursday to fight terrorists ``not for pride, not for power'' but to keep America safe.

``I believe this nation wants steady, consistent, principled leadership,'' Bush said in excerpts of his convention address obtained by The Associated Press.

Bush's acceptance speech came on the fourth and final day of a convention in which Republicans accused the president's rival John Kerry of indecision. In contrast, Bush said, ``I am running for president with a clear and positive plan to build a safe world, and a more hopeful America.''

He hinted at a second-term domestic agenda, saying times are changing dramatically for Americans as they switch jobs faster than ever before and the workforce becomes more skilled.

4. I like this:
"switch jobs faster than ever before and the workforce becomes more skilled"

Switch jobs faster because they are getting layed off faster than ever before. Becoming more skilled at flipping burgers and flapjacks.

3. dangerous words coming from a dangerous freak. how can he promise we
will be safe, when he doesn't think we can even win the war on terror? how can he make predictions that we'll be safe when he's simultaneously warning us that we're a "nation at risk"?

Kerry had better jump on this.

6. We do
want steady, consistent, principled leadership. Something we haven't had in 4 years.

7. very creepy, since we know he means the opposite of what he says
<snip>
He said a second-term administration would not just offer new government programs, ``but a path - a path to greater opportunity, more freedom, and more control over your own life.''

10. WTF???

``Many of our most fundamental systems - the tax code, health coverage, pension plans, worker training - were created for the world of yesterday, not tomorrow. We will transform these systems so that all citizens are equipped, prepared and thus truly free to make your own choices and pursue your own dreams,'' the president said.

UHhhh, will we all be unemployed?

12. this is the "history is over" premise of globalization:
the past doesn't matter; "everything changed"; Greenspan says we must retrain and get Ph.D.s in computers because predators are selling our processing and manufacturing jobs to India and Malaysia.
