Schwarzenegger Lauds Bush on Terror Fight

NEW YORK - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger drew on his childhood in Soviet-occupied Austria to praise President Bush (news - web sites)'s war on terror. "Terrorism is more insidious than communism," the bodybuilder-turned-politician said Tuesday in a speech to the Republican convention.

Bush "knows you don't reason with terrorists. You defeat them. He knows you can't reason with people blinded by hate," he said in prepared remarks.

Putting his star power to work for President Bush in a prime-time address, Schwarzenegger also urged optimism about the country's economy.

"To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say: 'Don't be economic girlie men!'" Schwarzenegger said — a line from a Saturday Night Live spoof of him that he used against Democratic legislators earlier this year. ..

5. What a weird speech!

Ahnold talked about what a wonderful country this is, and how anyone believing in the basic American principles can supposedly be a Republican. (Really? That's new.) But other than telling us that Bush hates terrorists (who doesn't?), Ahnold really didn't say much about why people should vote for Bush. Ahnold couldn't seem to think of a single accomplishment of the Bush administration other than simply being there when Al Qaeda struck. His speech was just bizarre as far as I am concerned. Good delivery, but boring content. It felt good going down, but left a disappointing aftertaste. Some immigrants may have warmed to his discussion of their common experiences. But his speech must be reminding a lot of moderate Republicans of just how estranged they are from their party.

By the way, Ahnold's constant use of his cute signature phrases is beginning to wear. I don't know how long we are going to be able to listen to him repeat them out here in Calleephoneya.
