Officials Fear Terrorists Could Try to Enter U.S. Through Mexico
July 30, 2004 — The U.S. government has become increasingly concerned that al Qaeda might try to exploit security gaps at the nation's borders, especially the Mexican border, ABC News has learned.

Concerns about border security were highlighted on July 19, when officials at McAllen-Miller International Airport in southern Texas arrested a woman suspected of having ties to al Qaeda.

"Al Qaeda has recognized that one of our vulnerabilities is our ability to completely seal and control access through Mexico," said ABC News consultant Jerry Hauer, former director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management.

Memos obtained by NBC reveal lax detention

Among many federal agents along the U.S. border with Canada, Washington's warnings about the need for vigilance against another terror attack ring hollow.

Border agents tell NBC News that since April, they've been forced to release most illegal immigrants back onto American streets within hours of catching them — even some who are criminals or from countries known to produce terrorists.

Shortly after 9/11, we were locking up everybody. There was no exception," says recently retired U.S. Border Agent Peter Kush. "We seem to be going back to the same old, same old song and dance."
Indeed, documents obtained by NBC News show that over the last month, illegal immigrants were repeatedly "released due to lack of detention funds."

The Bu$h administration: Letting al Qaeda into the US since 2001.

Why did they not fund the border patrol?

Could it be so that they could allow another attack? Keep the people of the US in the grip of fear? Incompetence?

Whatever the reason, there is no excuse. Bu$h must go. He and his negligence are a danger to our national security.

1. Umm - could be.
Could it be so that they could allow another attack? Keep the people of the US in the grip of fear? Incompetence?

Or, it could be old fashioned greed. Those businesses and top one per-centers love that cheap labor. What is the life of a few thousand Americans when balanced against a few more dollars profit gained by using illegal immigrant labor? (yes, I'm being sarcastic about the value of our lives, just in case there is any doubt.)

3. I saw on some TV show that we fly them back to central Mexico now
a charter takes them. It's not all of them..but plane loads at a time.

It makes sense that a terrorist would try to come across that border knowing how open it is.

11. This is a huge problem
No one has seriously guarded the southern border for years, it shouldn't surprise anyone that the terrorists have figured out that this is the easiest way to get in this country. Just blend in and with the hordes, and walk on in. Politicians always assumed it was just cheap labor and votes walking across the border.

On a side issue, why do we keep allowing a flood of cheap labor into this country that puts the squeeze on the middle class who now have to compete with a new labor supply that undercuts prevailing wage rates, and keeps them artificially low. No one ever talks about any of this...both sides pretend like it doesn't exist.

15. I'm a lot more worried about the good-paying jobs
that are being outsourced to India, than I am about undocumented workers performing low-paying menial jobs that most U.S. workers, let alone the precious middle class, won't do at all.

16. Outsourcing may be an overblown issue
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 12:39 AM by Rictexas
I was very concerned about this issue as well. I found a great site run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, that examines claims of both the D's and the R's, including the outsourcing issue. The URL is: http://www.factcheck.org/default.aspx

Look on the main page for the article entitled: "Kerry Blames Corporate Tax Code for Shipping Jobs Overseas"

Hope you find it helpful. I've found a lot of great information there.

It's really hard, nowadays, to support a comfortable suburban lifestyle on the wages you earn picking lettuce.

13. Our fascist government..."You will be afraid at all times"
Too bad it's been misused so often it's just a joke.

Any terrorists attack that occurs now will clearly be a failure for Bush, even if his "terrorists" do a good job.

Federal law enforcement officials are increasingly concerned terrorists may be using tunnels built by drug smugglers to breach the U.S.-Mexico border, Bloomberg News reports.

The financial newswire service reported yesterday that federal authorities have discovered six tunnels in nine months along the nation's southwest border, compared to the discovery of 11 tunnels in the past decade, according to Drug Enforcement Administration chief Asa Hutchinson.

"The tunnels can be used for contraband as well as drugs,'' Hutchinson said at a briefing with reporters.

President Bush has nominated Hutchinson to serve as undersecretary for border and transportation in the newly formed Department of Homeland Security.
