when Nancy Kulp, "Miss Hathaway", ran for office as a Dem in the 80's, he did radio ads against her.

18. And a rampant homophobe....
It wasn't just his RW freeperness that drove him to be so publicly vicious in his opposition to her campaign, but his near-hysterical homophobia. I lost any respect for him after that.

4. Wasn't he supposed to play the Tim Man
I think he was the first choice for the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz but he had a reaction to the silver paint. He was quite a talent: a good dancer and a decent actor. Once you get cast in a role on a juggarnaut like the Beverly Hillbillies that pretty much type casts you for the rest of your careeer.

14. your right
Ebsen had the Tin Man part but he was unable to do it because of the silver makeup he was allergic.

One other piece of trivia, you know those shorts that hollywood made to promote movies?

The one for the Wizard of Oz does have Buddy Ebsen in it.

Don't know if they ever remade it after his allergic reaction to the makeup.

I don't think they did because I just saw it the other night after the Wizard of Oz was shown.

I didn't know he was a right winger. Who'da thunk it?

15. Ugh, he was a right-winger?
I really liked him (still do) but it does suck that he was a rightwinger.

Oh well, at least Andy Griffith is a good Democrat. I grew up watching The Andy Griffith Show and Beverly Hillbillies back-to-back in syndication when I got home from school in the afternoons.

23. One of the last great dancers of then thirties
Astaire, Rogers, Bo Jangles, Bolger, Garland. Only Mickey Rooney is left.

It bothers me that he contributed to a campaign against Nancy Culp, but I heard shortly before her death the both of them reconciled their differences. If Nancy died being okay with Buddy then he is okay with me too.

Maybe I am a little naive on this but I have trouble visualizing Jed Clampett rubbing elbows with the likes of Tom Dee Lay. I'd rather remember Ebsen as someone who made me laugh and kept me entertained.

RIP

9. The darker side of Buddy Ebsen: a righwing wacko

Nancy Kulp

Remember Nancy Kulp of the Beverly Hillbillies? She played the secretary to the banker. This is what Buddy Ebsen did to her:

In 1984, Kulp unsuccessfully ran for the Ninth Congressional District's seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, blaming her defeat on a commercial for her opponent, which starred Buddy Ebsen.

http://www.tvland.com/shows/beverlyhillbillies/actor6.jhtml

It was a very vicious commercial that Ebsen made for Kulp's rightwing opponent. Ebsen accused Kulp of being a communist sympathizer.

What a pal!

11. I had no idea that he was when I posted this...
I had the radio on in the background and heard this. I remembered him as Jed Clampett, noticed it hadn't been reported here and posted it. It sucks to find out that he was such a vehement Rethug.

16. Oh, It Spoils It For Me That He Was Right-Wing
I always liked Buddy Ebsen -- he always seemed wise, compassionate, and down to earth across different roles.

I liked his supporting role in "Breakfast at Tiffany's", for example. I like his quote about what a professional is: "someone who can do their own job without making your job any harder."

Now I find out he torpedoed Miss Hathaway's political career by accusing her of being a commie symp. Geez!

20. Yeah, I know what you mean, Art...
...it sucks that he was such a rabid repug, 'cause he was one of my favorite character actors, and seemed, albeit in that far-off land of Hollywood, to be such a nice guy! Would have liked to see what he would have done with the Tin Man role, although I can't imagine anyone more suited to bringing that character to life than Jack Haley!

Still, political differences aside, I liked pretty much every thing I saw him in. RIP, Buddy.

(...and how many of the fine, old actors have we lost in the past few weeks, anyway?!)

21. Hate to say this
Pity Nancy Kulp died before him.

She was cool.

He viciously attacked her when she ran for office.

She's in heaven.

He's probably in hell, a place whose path is paved with republicans and big business.

Assuming heaven and hell exist, of course. I just think heaven and hell were devised to keep us occupied by thinking who's going to end up where...
