GOP presses actor's rivals to quit

GOP presses actor's rivals to quit

Leaders trying to clear the field for Schwarzenegger

Carla Marinucci, John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writers Friday, August 15, 2003

San Diego -- GOP leaders are working overtime to persuade Republicans Bill Simon, Tom McClintock and Peter Ueberroth to drop out of the recall race to replace Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, clearing the field for action movie superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sean Walsh, a spokesman for the actor, said the conversations were occurring, though he denied that Schwarzenegger's campaign was involved.

"There are numerous politicians, activists and business leaders who believe Arnold is what we need to fix California's problems," Walsh said Thursday night. "They have informed us that they've tried to convince the others to leave."

Duf Sundheim, the state GOP chairman, said the party isn't pushing any candidate to withdraw, but "I'm talking with the different campaigns on a daily basis, judging their supporters," as well as looking at polls.

(I guess that means Arnold IS the GOP candidate or is this just more Rovian propaganda?)

1. Arnold can fix California's problems?
Since when? What a joke. Exactly what about the groper makes anyone think he can fix anything? That's the most misleading thing I've heard all day today. If it wasn't so laughable, I'd be crying. I used to live in CA and I'm ashamed that anyone would think this guy has anything to contribute. He's just like junior, a figurehead puppet, whose strings would be manuevered by the one puppeteer - Rove.

Wake up, California...before it's too damned late!

My FAIR and BALANCED humble opinions

7. Pete Wilson and Ronald Reagan's "kitchen cabinets"
will be running the state...don't kid yourselves.

When Republicans can't win fairly, they cheat.

2. It means Rush et al won't be talking about actors
...meddling in politics for a while. Not that blatant hypocrisy ever stopped them before, but timing is everything.

4. Seems like Issa was a "sensitive" boy
Caved in too soon. Arnold, McClintock and Bill Simon went ahead anyway. Issa should have gone ahead as well. All he needed was some PR to position himself as an outsider.

5. That annoying thing called Democracy

What is it with Republicans and Democracy?

They asked for the recall...they knew the Consequences…Now the results aren’t to their liking and they are balking?

Amazing at how low they will go.

8. Just how will Arnold...
bring his formidable talents to bear on the problems in California? Train the 7.62mm General Electric Mini-Gun from Terminator on them, give a thumbs up, then retire to home for another face-lift?

9. Has anyone heard Arnold's solutions?
'cuz I sure haven't -- mostly he's been dodging questions and making bad jokes taken from his bad movies
