Kerry Hit on Laci Peterson Law
Candidate: President Bush

snip......

Images: Rows of tiny pictures of Kerry; the U.S. Capitol; an elderly woman; an American soldier; pregnant women

Audio: Leadership means choosing priorities. While campaigning, John Kerry has missed over two-thirds of all votes. Missed a vote to lower health-care costs by reducing frivolous lawsuits against doctors. Missed a vote to fund our troops in combat.

Yet Kerry found time to vote against the Laci Peterson law that protects pregnant women from violence. Kerry has his priorities. Are they yours?

2. The good part is
their credability is so low most intelligent people wont believe this.
If this is true I'm sure he was voting against some other pork they were attatching to this bill, which is their style.

10. The bad part is...
Most Americans are not intelligent.

When someone told Adlai Stevenson he had the vote of every
thinking person, he replied: "That's not enough, madam. We need a
majority."

17. Unfortunately that is true.
and a lot of uninformed voters could be swayed by this because it is an emotional argument, especially as the Peterson cause is being continuously covered in the media.

3. I just turned my TV on to that crap
Kerry missed (73%??) of all senate votes - yet he found time to vote against the Laci Peterson bill. Anyone have that law, know what was in it or, most likely, what was attached to it?

14. Spot on
The Demcratic version was modeled after California's fetal murder statute, which makes a distinction between a human being and a fetus.

Republicans killed the measure by hanging their radical religious agenda on it.

4. How Can "Not-Being-Present" To Vote For A Law...
... be equated to being opposed to said law?

Perhaps it wasn't a crucial vote... perhaps it was one of those "no-brainer" laws that would have passed with 99% of everyone supporting it.

Why do they NOT tell us whether he supported the laws? Why do they neglect to tell us what the final vote was?

Do Republicans think that Americans THAT STUPID??

12. I Must Have Misunderstood
I've seen another anti-Kerry ad that tries to paint him as being negligent and overly absent from his duties.

I haven't seen the ad referred to in this thread (and obviously I didn't read carefully enough) because I thought it was about the one I had seen.

Thanks for clarifying it for me.

19. And for that we are all grateful
All of the votes he didn't vote on were going to go the GOP way whether he was there or not. This one was different.

22. He's never made that claim.
All Flynt has ever said is that he has evidence that Bush paid for a girlfriend's abortion when the procedure was still illegal in the United States. He makes no mention of her being 15. Frankly, I think that's been added on by dishonest lefties in order to make the story seem more salacious -- much as the Clinton rumors escalated to the point where he was being accused of rape and fathering illegitimate children with drug-addicted hookers.

Even in that CROSSFIRE show Flynt never claims anything about the girl in question being underaged.

13. Laws don't protect people from violence
They define what crimes are and what punishments can be given for people convicted of them.

15. Like we don't already have laws "protecting" pregnant women?
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 09:24 AM by BiggJawn
I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that pregnant women were classified as "outlaws" and needed a special law for protection. I thought the same statutes against assaulting women applied to all women, not just the non-pregnant ones.

This is some more of that knee-jerk bullshit by some ass who wants to be able to hit the campaign trail at home and say "See? I'm SERIOUS about crime! I gave you 'Laci's Law'!"

This is the same sensational one-upmanship that has put Illinois into a situation where if you go to prison, and learn to cut/style hair or some other trade, you're fucked when you get out, because the "I'm tougher on crime than my opponent" mentality has ratcheted up things to the point that a ex-offender can't get a state license to practice the trade he learned in prison as "rehabilitation"....

Killing a woman is already a capital offense. Why is it more heinous just because she's pregnant? What about all those billions of potential babies *I'M* carrying around?

This is a bullshit law, and anyone with 1/2 a brain ought to be applauding Kerry for not falling in with the "Herd" and falling for that "protecting innocent unborn BABIES" crap...

Life doesn't begin at conception. The egg and sperm were alive before. If we're protecting cellular life now, better not have your kidney removed, huh?

Independent, individual life begins at BIRTH. That's when an individual's rights begin, and rightly so. The Laci coverage and the Laci law are just partisan tools.

I'm convinced that the media wants deregulation and consolidation so badly it will demonize the major political party that would thwart their ambitions.

23. The "law"
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 04:24 PM by Catt03
President Bush signed into law the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act,” granting legal status to a fetus as a human being for the first time. The new law undermines the historic 1973 Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade, which maintains that “the unborn have never been recognized in the law as persons in the whole sense.” The new law renders an attack on a pregnant woman that injures or kills her and the fetus a crime against two human beings.

President Kate Michelman says the law is “part of a larger strategy to establish the embryo with separate distinct rights equal to if not greater than the woman.”

The death of Laci Peterson was a terrible tragedy, but the anti-choice movement's decision to rename this bill "Laci and Connor's Law" is a cynical explotation of the tragedy of Laci Peterson's murder.

http://www.wanaral.org/s05politicalupdates/newsupdates/200405121.shtml

And get this!

In 2002, the Bush administration amended the State Childerens Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide coverage for embryos and fetuses, but not pregnant women

Speaking on CNN last May, Senator Orrin Hatch said "They say it undermines abortion rights. It does...but that's irrelevant."

----------------------------------------

You may agree with this law however what they are saying is that a fetus is of more value and more important than a woman.
