Haitians invited to advise on aid

[email protected]Following his surprise visit to Haiti this week, Gov. Jeb Bush says he plans to meet soon with leaders in the Haitian-American community to get their advice on how Florida can help Haitians rebuild their impoverished and troubled country. Bush, in a telephone interview from Tallahassee, also said he was inclined to support granting Temporary Protected Status to Haitian refugees who face deportation back to Haiti.
''I would be inclined to support it but need to know more about what the proposal is about,'' he said. ``I intend to learn more about what the specifics would be.''
His brother, President Bush, has so far opposed granting TPS to Haitians despite requests from some U.S. lawmakers and immigration advocates following Haiti's recent political and natural disasters.
The Republican governor arrived in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, Wednesday morning and left about 6:30 p.m. Bush, who said he plans to share his impressions of Haiti with the president, was accompanied by U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Andrew Natsios and Adolfo Franco, assistant administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean.
