Cantwell calls for release of all Enron tapes

By GENE JOHNSON
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

EVERETT, Wash. -- Sen. Maria Cantwell on Monday called on the U.S. Justice Department to release all the audio tapes it has of conversations by Enron Corp. energy traders.

At a news conference with Snohomish County Public Utility District officials, the Washington Democrat said the tapes could help the PUD and others throughout the West in their legal battles with the Houston company.

"I want to make sure no federal agency tries to suppress the evidence," Cantwell said.

Enron filed for bankruptcy protection in 2001 amid devastating revelations of hidden debt, inflated profits and shady accounting. Transcripts of a small portion of the existing tapes revealed that Enron traders laughed about manipulating the electricity market in California three and four years ago during the West Coast power crunch.

2. the very fact that the DOJ had the tapes and tried to prevent...
...their release is evidence of government complicity in the obstruction of justice-- unless they can argue (convincingly) that withholding the evidence was necessary for making their own case stick, but even that denies state attorneys general their duty to use that evidence on behalf of their constituents. Any way you slice it, DOJ screwed the pooch.

4. Just because Arnie has cut a (cheating Californians) deal
with the energy companies... doesn't mean that the other effected states should follow suit.

Right on, Sen. Cantwell... Let Our Enron Tapes Go (public!)
