Bush calls for funds for church projects
WASHINGTON -- President Bush, trying to revive a stalled initiative, said Tuesday the doctrine of separation of church and state should not prevent religious groups from competing for government money to help the needy.

Thwarted by Congress, the president has sidestepped lawmakers with executive orders and regulations to give religious organizations equal footing in competing for federal contracts. He is still fighting for legislation that would give religious groups access to federal funds as long as their services are available to anyone.

"I'm telling America, we need to not discriminate against faith-based programs," Bush said. "We need to welcome them so our society is more wholesome, more welcoming and more hopeful for every single citizen."

Opponents of Bush's initiative, launched in the early days of his administration, worry that government could wind up paying for religion. They also object to allowing taxpayer-funded groups to hire and fire based on religious persuasion.

And please if you had a drink today you'll have to stay outside.

One nice thing about a lot of these religions is they are like Halliburton---They'll STEAL the government "BLIND"

8. My recurring nightmare....
Cheney's past catches up with him. Halliburton, the Energy meetings, etc. So, he resigns "for his health". In an unprecedented act of non-partisanship, Bush appoints Leiberman to finish his term--or as his running mate. If Bush's own past catches up with him & the drums of impeachment begin, he'll take a quick flight back to Crawford. Can't take the stress, you know.

Then, President Leiberman will ensure that there are pardons for all.

But this can't happen! It's too late in the term & Bush surely won't be elected. (Images of Nixon, Agnew & Ford trouble my dreams.)

6. A recent Frontline story depicting Bush's rise to power...
points to the direct relationship of huge voting blocks of the Christian Right as instrumental to his ascending the presidency. Frontline also pointed out that no other religious denominations have been recognized by the Bush Administration as eligible for Federal Funding. Many have applied for federal funds and have either been turned down or flat out ignored by his Faith Based Initiative Agency.

This would be an issue worth exploring by the Kerry Camp.

9. As Steve Goldsmith once said...
Goldsmith, who was #2 man at the Orfice of Faithful Doohickeys, was asked if, under the Bush plan, that a Coven of Wiccans would be eliglble for funding to open a soup kitchen.

Goldsmith's reply?

"Uh, probably not...."

Goldsmith is now a VP at Boeing. What a strange road from Mayor of Indianapolis and High Priest of Privatization to failed Gubernatorial candidate of Indiana to #2 at the OFBI, and then to one of the GOP's biggest bed-partners....

10. "Wanna sandwich? Tell us how much you love Jeebus FIRST!"
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 07:43 AM by BiggJawn
"What? You're an Atheist (Hindu, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) Well, no sandwich for YOU! these are for GAWD's children!"

That's EXACTLY how these "rescue missions" and church shelters operate. You want help? You gotta pray "The Sinner's Prayer" and "Accept Jesus" FIRST.

But nobody talks about that. They choose to focus instead on whether a church will be required to hire gays or single mothers for their social programs if they take Caesar's coin, instead of exposing how they dole out and withold their "aid".

12. Nah, we'll just force
taxpayers to fund organizations that often actively discriminate againt THEM. And as for Congress, who needs them anyway. Remember the rightwing and media "outcry" over each and every Clinton executive order, WTF happened?
