The Defense Department will replace Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez as the top U.S. military officer in Iraq at the end of next month, defense officials told NBC News on Monday, stressing that the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal was not a factor in the deliberations.

Defense officials said Sanchez, who became the top U.S. general in Iraq last June, would be replaced on July 1, when the United States hands over power to an interim Iraqi government. The candidate most likely to take over is Gen. George Casey, the Army’s vice chief of staff, who would assume the new position of unified commander of military forces in Iraq, they said.

Bryan Whitman, a spokesman for the Defense Department, would neither confirm nor deny the report. “If we had something like that to announce, we would. Any speculation prior to an announcement would be irresponsible,” he said.

3. Sanchez Replaced As His Involvement in Prison Abuse Surfaces
Edited on Mon May-24-04 10:05 PM by David Zephyr
See link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5039808/

"A military lawyer for a soldier charged in the Abu Ghraib abuse case stated that a captain at the prison said the highest-ranking U.S. military officer in Iraq was present during some 'interrogations and/or allegations of the prisoner abuse,' according to a recording of a military hearing obtained by The Washington Post.

"The lawyer, Capt. Robert Shuck, said he was told that Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez and other senior military officers were aware of what was taking place on Tier 1A of Abu Ghraib. Shuck is assigned to defend Staff Sgt. Ivan L. "Chip" Frederick II of the 372nd Military Police Company. During an April 2 hearing that was open to the public, Shuck said the company commander, Capt. Donald J. Reese, was prepared to testify in exchange for immunity. The military prosecutor questioned Shuck about what Reese would say under oath.

"'Are you saying that Captain Reese is going to testify that General Sanchez was there and saw this going on?' asked Capt. John McCabe, the military prosecutor.

"'That's what he told me,' Shuck said. 'I am an officer of the court, sir, and I would not lie. I have got two children at home. I'm not going to risk my career.'"

9. Anyone know a timetable that will keep this one alive?
Reminds me so much of the Watergate years and Scott's maxim, "O what webs we weave when first we practice to deceive." This and the missing 2,000 page Taguba report have enormous potential.

oops, somebody beat me to the punch

dosn't exactly inspire confidence in the war effort does it? The media will do there best to bury the story and Sanchez's failures, much like with Jay Garner....remember him?

10. They have to get Barbara Fast former head of Military Intelligence
in Iraq....this is the true link to the Neo-Con civilian administration and possibly Bush himself. The army would not have wisked her off to Arizona so fast if she wasn't the link to the civilian administration.

What the hell is Kennedy and Bob Kerry doing?...get her in front of the armed services commitee and the whole Neo-Con Administration will topple.
