Apple reveals security hole

Thought I'd post this for my Mac friends...

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc., long considered to be relatively immune to the security holes and viruses that plague longtime rival Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, said on Friday a security hole in its software leaves users' computers vulnerable to attack.

<SNIP>

The specific nature of the security hole, such as whether it makes the computer vulnerable to outsiders or allows virus-like code to enter the operating system, was not made clear. Cupertino, California-based Apple's officials declined to provide specific comment beyond the release.

<SNIP>

Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder and chief executive, likes to take the stage to tell loyal users of the company's "insanely great" products with "the best operating system in the world" but the message from company officials on Friday was markedly toned down.

<SNIP>
No word on whether it affects the iPod.

1. Apple has just released a security update to take care of this.
It is available via the Software Update preference pane or as stand alone updaters for 10.3.3 and 10.2.8, both client and server.

I wish they'd release an SSH terminal anyway. I know there are third party apps out there ...

4. No platform is immune
if it connects to the outside world in any way, shape or form.

Apple is less vulnerable because the experts have been working on shoring up Unix longer than Windows; because of Microsoft's lax attitude towards security; and because miscreant programmers get more bang for the buck targeting Windows.

6. they fixed it
unlike about 80% of my blinkered Win-Doh!z friends who have been repeatedly hammered by viruses and worms and trojan horses over the last 18 months, I'm up and running (knock on wood!)

7. For my Windows Friends -

Apple will never be as sloppy coding its OS as MS is.

Instead of crowing at this (now fixed) security hole in OS X, let's put more pressure on M$ to make its products secure and to fix the gillions of vulnerabilities in. I use Windows as well as Mac OS X, and let me tell you that IMHO Windows is the problematic one.

8. Running OS X here
Internet connection always on. Firewall disabled. If anybody's in Rochester, MN and wants a wifi hotspot, just PM me.

Never had a virus, worm, or trojan horse affect my computers. I'm not running to update my OS until it does so automatically.

Hehe
