Bush to Outline 'Clear Strategy' for Iraq Monday
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&e=2&u=/nm/20040521/pl_nm/iraq_bush_dc_8

This oughta go over as well as his "News Conference" did, or even his interview on "Meet the Press" with Tim Russertt. Hell, this speech might even be as earth-shattering as his insistence that Rumsfeld is a "superb" Secretary of Defense.

It must not be that big of a deal, or they have low expectations... the White House hasn't even requested that the networks air the speech (from the Army War College) live.

Excerpt:

President Bush will outline what the White House called a "clear strategy" for Iraq on Monday night in a speech aiming to convince Americas he is in command of the situation.

Bush's speech to the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, will be at 8 p.m. EDT. The White House typically asks the television networks to carry important evening addresses live, but spokesman Trent Duffy said on Friday the White House has not asked the networks to do so.

"The president looks forward on Monday evening to discussing with the American people and with a global audience a clear strategy on how we need to move forward," Duffy told reporters accompanying the president on a trip to Louisiana.

5. Okay, shouldn't somebody tell
the White House that you're supposed to have a clear strategy BEFORE you invade and occupy another country?

It's a little late George!

How stupid do they think the American People are?

I'm patiently waiting for the day when their stupidity surpasses the stupidity of the masses

14. That's it in a nutshell, jay-3d.
Of course, he'll likely throw in a reference that war-doubters do not believe "brown people deserve democracy."

So, I guess I would say the speech will sound something like this:

freedom terror terror terror terror they hate us because of our freedom you hate brown people terror terror terror John Kerry will raise your taxes fear terror freedom

I have had enough of his lies. I see what is going on in Iraq and I don't need his rosy interpretation of how wonderful things are.

11. Yes, clear strategy, as in ridiculous platitudes
"we will bring peace and democracy to Iraq through the generosity of the American spirit..."

yes, George, but how?

"with compassion"

yes, but how?

"with freedom in our hearts"

forget it. His speeches and "policies" are nothing but buzzword bingo: synergy! paradigm! freedom! Our president might as well be Lumberg from Office Space, "yyyyyyyyyyyyeah, I'm gonna need you to....ummmm...staaaay in Iraq....for about 10 years, mmmmmkay?"

13. Well DUH...
...shouldn't he have done this FIRST? The only damn thing he DID do was make sure that (before they even went into Afghanistan) the US isn't held accountable for war crimes and for torturing prisoners. He managed to do THAT beforehand but was the *only* preparation he did. How utterly stupid and macabre. However, one could expect nothing less from bu$hit.

I think it's too late to "convince Americans he's in charge of the situation". That empty suit isn't in charge of *any* situation this country faces, much less Iraq. He is wholly driven by his puppetmasters and simply does what he's told. THAT much is obvious.

God bless Nancy Pelosi for saying so, too.

That being so - and he being the empty suit he is - he's about as useful as (bu$)shit on a pump handle to the country he forced himself into office to "lead".

20. Two Americas: why this infomercial isn't going to be on network TV
Bush's handlers will have concluded there's little to be gained from going widely public with this speech. Awake America will only see it as proof of his failure. Worse, it might realize that its sons and daughters are scheduled to appear in our plutocrats' next Middle East melodrama. No need to stir the hornet's nest!

No, Sleeping America is the intended audience. The speech will go out to the culture of Wal-Mart, land of the true believers. They, after all, are the critical base, as they provide the cannon fodder. Over the past few weeks, the hideous proofs of their sons' and daughters' atrocities will have shaken them up and put many in need of booster shots of "faith" and "honor." It's a big job, of course, keeping millions in thrall to medievalism. Right wing and religious media will bring the message to them, just as God intended.

Yes, it's all terribly unfair. We will all suffer the consequences of Iraq--not merely the Wal-Martians who bought the silly line about liberation. Worse, as the harrumphers will remind us, democracy can not work if national policy speeches are given only to the president's fans, while the TV networks (the most important media in a post-literate society) sell "reality TV" to surreal viewers. But who hasn't noticed that we are past democracy now?

"911 will not go unpunished. Another 911 would be bad. Ahhhhhhhhh Bad in like a badness that is evil. Evil is bad....evil hates Iraqi freedom."

27. More wrong with this picture.
Why the fuck is this guy telling the U.S. Army War College about his clear strategy when he should have asked the USAWC for one to begin with?

From the USAWC's mission statement:

"To prepare selected military, civilian, and international leaders for the responsibilities of strategic leadership; educate current and future leaders on the development and employment of landpower in a joint, multinational and interagency environment; conduct research and publish on national security and military strategy; and engage in activities in support of the Army’s strategic communication efforts."

30. I've been thinking about that quote and I'm worried
that it is just a trick because I can't imagine a Republican being brave enough to say it. I wonder if Bush really conveyed the message that they didn't need to worry about the election (wink, wink) because (nudge, nudge) there was no way they could lose. (Diebold)

If he needed to communicate that the fix is in, the best way for him to do it would be to get them all together in private and convey it without incriminating himself. It seems to me that the Bushies are always meeting with people personally to threaten, bribe, plot, etc. rather than making phone calls or putting something in writing.

33. But is a clear strategy what is needed?
What is needed in Iraq may not be easy to explain or do. it may not be clear. Then again, there might be a clear strategy, but the point here is the same, in that his motivation is to show that he is "in command". Wrong motivation, dipshit. You show you are in command by knowing what the hell you are doing.

Bush is in way over his head. Way in over his little pointy head. May he make a damn fool of himself again in front of the whole world who despises him and who takes to the streets by the thousands, to protest his insane policies--except in the Untied States, that is.

Here we still think we need to give him some room.

42. WaPo article: President Plans Drive To Rescue Iraq Policy
Gotta love the title:

The president will open a tightly orchestrated public relations effort in a speech at the Army War College outlining U.S. plans for the critical five weeks before the limited transfer of political power June 30. The White House then intends to circulate this week a draft U.N. resolution on post-occupation Iraq, wrap up negotiations with Iraqis on an interim government and begin shoring up the coalition to ensure that other foreign forces also stay after June 30, U.S. officials said.

~snip~

The diplomatic campaign is a response to serious reversals over the past two months and to growing turmoil. Last week alone, the U.S.-appointed president of the Iraqi Governing Council was assassinated and a cabinet official was almost killed in a suicide bombing; in a disputed episode, more than 40 people were killed by U.S. troops at what Iraqis said was a wedding party; and 16 arrest warrants were issued for aides or associates of Ahmed Chalabi, a longtime Pentagon favorite to help lead postwar Iraq, on charges related to financial issues, leading him to sever ties with the U.S.-led coalition.

The road ahead could get bumpier. France and Germany are urging that any new U.N. resolution stipulate a cutoff date for U.S. and foreign forces in Iraq. And negotiations by the U.N. and U.S. envoys in charge of identifying a new president, prime minister, two vice presidents and more than two dozen cabinet ministers have been complicated by a Kurdish threat not to participate unless a Kurd gets one of the two top positions.

~snip~

"He will talk about the importance of not lowering our sights and sticking to our goals of a free, peaceful, democratic Iraq, of adhering to our commitment to the June 30 transfer of sovereignty, and of an election in a January time frame," said a White House official who insisted on anonymity.
~snip~

So much more:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48487-2004May22.html

Just think...this is just the first of 6 speeches planned before June 30.
