Iraqi father 'tortured to death'

From correspondents in Berlin

May 15, 2004

<snip>

Spiegel TV said it had witness accounts and documents to prove that 47-year-old Asad Abdul Kareem Abdul Jaleel had been killed at the US military base at Al Asad, west of the town Khan Al Baghdadi.

<snip>

"A fellow prisoner gave Spiegel TV a detailed description how the man was sadistically tortured in the five days after his arrest," it said.

"US soldiers also took photos of this abuse."

<snip>

Spiegel TV said that US forces had tried to cover up the death of the prisoner at Al Asad by declaring in a report that he had "died in his sleep" in a document signed by pathologist Luis Santiago.

The death certificate stated that no autopsy had been conducted.

<snip>

"The photographs of the corpse, which Spiegel TV has also seen, indicate the man was tortured," it said, adding that the body also appeared to have undergone an autopsy using "Western methods".

<snip>

Spiegel TV said that Iraqi coroners were told not to conduct an autopsy if an American death certificate was provided, even if the cause of death appeared not to correspond to the injuries.

2. Died in his sleep?
How sick and wretched is this? It is all so disgusting -- is it enough to shake the self-righteousness out of the "power of pride" crowd? Is anything enough?

5. His crime, according to the story
Walking along an open road.

Sure sounds like a capital offense to me. And no wonder he was tortured to death -- he wouldn't confess to his obvious crimes!

7. This story needs all the dupes it can get
Maybe THIS one will break through to the American people and let them understand the travesty we are committing in Iraq.

Behind every person killed, tortured, maimed, humiliated, there are another dozen people whose lives are forever transformed by the loss. How can we go on committing this mass atrocity and expecting it somehow to "work out" or turn out well. We are in the grip of some mass delusion, not seeing the obvious truth before our eyes.

10. Who will call this "hazing" or "harsh interrogation" or "abuse"?
I hope Der Spiegel has some more information about similar cases and their systematic cover up.
