Conservative groups pleaded with a federal judge Wednesday in an 11th-hour bid to stop the nation's first state-sanctioned gay marriages from taking place next week in Massachusetts.

Mathew Staver, president and general counsel of the Florida-based Liberty Counsel, argued that the state's high court stepped outside its jurisdiction when it ruled in November that gay marriage should be legal in Massachusetts.

``It's an unusual time that we live in, and we're asking this court to intervene to prevent this constitutional train wreck,'' Staver told U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro

the judge was appointed to the bench by Nixon

2. If the high court stepped outside its jurisdiction ...
when ruling in a civil rights case, then that means EVERY civil rights decision ever made by the courts, including the Supreme Court, is invalid. The whole point of the taking an issue like this to court is so that citizens have a way to challenge/change the law when legislatures won't get involved because of political reasons. There have got to be hundreds of cases that set a precedent for the court to decide civil rights issues, even when the law doesn't support those rights.

If this judge gives the right-wingers what they want, he will be rendering the entire judicial system useless.
