Bush Adm. To Congress: Leave Alone Overtime Rule Change (veto)
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)

The White House on Wednesday threatened to veto legislation funding the nation's labor, health and education programs if Democrats succeeded in amending it to block proposed changes to overtime rules.

Democrats are considering offering an amendment to the annual spending bill barring the Department of Labor from implementing the rules changes. ---

Democrats may also try amend the bill to block the Department of Labor from increasing financial disclosure requirements for labor unions.

"If either one of these provisions were included in the final version of the bill, the president's senior advisers would recommend that he veto the bill," the Office of Management and Budget wrote in a statement released Wednesday. ---

1. Let the bastard veto
Let him veto a bill just before election season, with the veto based solely on provisions not being left in the bill that allow the rape of the American worker.

It will help immeasurably with his "I hate common people" election theme.

20. A plan? Probably not. More serendipity, I would think.
But if fate drops such an obvious opportunity into their laps, it would be insane to let it pass by. The WH has been staggered a little by the WMD/Nuclear brouhaha that (for a change) isn't being killed in the crib by the "liberal" press. He's weakened, at least temporarily. Perfect timing. Kick him while he's down. It would be a win for workers, and a little more teflon scraped off the Amiable Idiot's veneer.

As Rocky would say, "Go for it."

2. Sounds like a showdown that we win.
Let's see...Bush vetos an appropriations bill to do exactly 2 things:

1. Strip 8 million working Americans of their right to overtime pay.

AND

2. Cost workers' unions hundreds of millions of dollars in compliance costs for ridiculous disclosure requirements that not even corps like Enron or Worldcom have to abide by.

If this is the showdown, how do we lose?

6. Not just the unions!!
The millions of dollars cost to unions is not the cost to the unions only. It is also a cost to the members paying their dues to provide the services that will now be reduced because of the republicans and bush.

3. "bring 'em on"
bush* will be burned big time because his vetoe will be overridden. All of the unions in this country are lining up to defeat this "moran" and the workers who depend on OT to pay bills will send him packing. This may even win back some of the unionworkers who vote repuke because of the gun issue, but this OT crap from bush* is pissing them off!!!

I know because I am a union member.

5. Yeppers
This is the best issue for traction with repubs or fence sitters.

I know those of us on DU are appalled at the Iraqi invasion and the lies that Shrub told to get us into that mess (I had a fight with my brother in the middle of Pappadeaux's last night over that very thing).

But of all the things that I tell people who I consider to be RINOs, this OT issue really hits home. Most Americans really ARE that short-sighted, self-centered, apathetic and un- or misinformed about the politics of the invasion. But when you start telling them about how Shrubbie wants to dig into their wallets, they get pissed.

Sad commentary on society, I admit. They should be more outraged that our men and women are fighting and dying for oil. But I have actually "converted" 2 Shrub voters to Dem or 3d party based SOLELY on the OT issue.

8. I think what he is doing is trying to impoverish the American worker
destroy the middle class, so that our labor force will be
more in line with the rest of the worlds...working for peanuts.
What he's trying to do is return to the early 1900's when there
were the rich and the worker "peasants".

Of course crime and murder will increase, but societal effects
would never occur to this scum. Stripping the people of medical care, recourse to the courts, social security, (Gore was so RIght)head start, any beneficial program to the public. Knowing he thinks he's the second coming, he should be tacked up to a cross and left out for the buzzards, like the homeless people he's creating. After all God told him to do these things.

10. Bingo! Impoverish the American worker indeed
The rich want the rest of us groveling and begging for crubms. Makes us easier to control. If you are facing starvation you get real cooperative. Also easier to turn folks on each other if they feel so threatened. They think fear will prevent organization.

And really bad economic times will bring higher enlistment numbers. The US military is now used as the rent-a-cop security force for mega corporations who meet resistance from locals in far away lands when they rape and pillage resources and labor. "Insurgants" or folks who have just been abused beyond the point of toleration? Is that how we want American military troops used? To fight people with legitimate complaints who are painted as terrorists? But in bad economic times, the young will have littel choice.

They forget one thing: those with nothing to lose become unpredictable and dangerous. If they go just a wee bit too far, the guards at the gated communities will not be enough to save their hides.

18. That is exactly what I was wanting to hear
There are a lot of union, factory jobs in typical repug strongholds. This may get your average person to vote against the idiot. But we must not forget that he is spreading the word at his fund raisers that the recession started in the Clinton administration. We must also not forget that 23% of the people believe that WMD have been found. I guess what I am saying is "Do not let your fellow union workers forget this"!!!

Print this article, and the thread and what ever else you have to print and leave it at work on a table in the lunch room.

Win-win for big biz. Lose-lose for labor. Who has the most votes? We do, if we can get them out!

BTW: I am union too. ALPA/AFL-CIO (Air Line Pilots Association).

12. We must fight the fight
fearlessly and fiercely. If we do not fight this battle, there will be no point in claiming to be the party of labor.

15. I listen to the Bev Smith Show, and the theory is that he wants to sneak
this in before the election year, that if it fails this year, he won't try it again next year.

IMHO, even trying to do this this year will produce a backlash next year. People will NOT forget about this.

19. People will forget
He will tell them that they are doing better now than ever before and his tax cuts have put money in their pockets and the people will all say yes. They will all say they are doing better because the president said we are. This must be kept alive and told. I have people at my place of work that refuse to believe their beloved president would do anything like this to them. They think I am lying, some just look at me in disgust and shake their heads. One of the response I got is congress needs to stop this. So if it does go thru there are certain people that will think it is the fault of congress, not Bush.

I can not say it enough, EDUCATE THE PEOPLE.

I am thrilled they are finally showing it. This is where the rubber meets the road, taking money out of average American pockets. Hell, that's enough to get Joe Sixpack out of his Lazy-Boy and Vote!
