9. true indeed...
while most engineers are having a hard time finding jobs in the private sector, there are jobs aplenty in the defense industry...

18. wow
That article talks about places that are really close to home. In my area we have had a lot of reservists ship out lately too and the only jobs are defense jobs.

10. Age-old story
Most economists will tell you, "War is good for the economy."

Too bad it's also hell on the soul.

11. war = jobs? not really a new concept
after all, WWII helped turn around the country from the depression. economists have long recognized that mobilizing a nation for war will result in jobs and work in certain sectors. these job growths, however, do not necessarily equate to wide-spread economic improvements, rather in specific markets.

12. These jobs don't necessarily help the economy over a long period
If jobs building weapons lead to sustainable economic growth, the USSR would still be in power. Heck, we'd never gone through a recession. The problem lies with spending government dollars on something that goes overseas and does not contribute to the productivity of the US. If the money spent on weapons was instead put into better roads, public transportation, more affordable health care, research, and a host of other avenues, we'd have better long term growth. Right now the US is losing its advantage. Soon we'll be like the old USSR running around the world trying to invade Afghanistan or displace radical Islamic groups in Chechnya...Ooops, I guess we're already there.

14. I've been saying this for over a year. But watch the law of diminishing
returns. Ask Russia about the expense and costs of a protratec, illegal invasion and war.

19. $477 billion in phantom money
go out and rack up your credit card at 30% of your annual wages and see what a nice life you would live.

Just think a minute, if you make$50k a year and spend an extra $15k A YEAR, your life who be a whole lot nicer. But as we know there is a down side and sooner than later the American economy will experience the severe downside of this huge borrowing binge.

21. well, my story
the company i work for, in manufacturing, has been busy for two years now, and currently hiring just about any body we can get in the door. we make stainless and titanium medical implants, stuff for bolting mutilated bodies back together. as far as i know we are one of only a few machine shops in the area that are actually busy. many have closed. i guess if the maiming stops, i lose a job.

And the ReTHUGlican pit-bulls start howling about Kerry killing the Economy, "after all that hard work Incurious George put into salvaging it", when the War Industry winds down and starts down-sizing...

Can't win, can we?
