KABUL, May 5 (Reuters) - The Taliban claimed responsibility on Wednesday for the killings of two foreigners and their Afghan translator as they helped the United Nations to arrange elections in eastern Afghanistan.

The two Westerners worked for London-based Global Risk Strategies, which supplies security consultants for a U.N. programme to register voters for landmark elections planned for September, officials said.

Taliban commander Mullah Sabir Momin told Reuters by satellite phone from an undisclosed location that the victims were probably British.

"The two British non-believers and their Afghan translator were killed by the Taliban because the Taliban is killing all locals and foreigners who are helping the Americans to consolidate their occupation of Afghanistan," he said.

Two foreign contractors helping the U.N. prepare for landmark elections and their Afghan driver were killed in an attack in a remote eastern province, senior Afghan officials said Wednesday.

The foreigners killed in Tuesday's attack were employees of Global Risk Strategies, a London-based security firm, said Farooq Wardak, the Afghan government's top election official. He didn't have the men's names or nationalities.

"I confirm that there was an attack by a number of people and two foreigners and one Afghan were killed," said Deputy Interior Minister Hilalludin Hilal.

Register voters? I don't believe it. What could they accomplish? Is this an important use of our tax dollars when we have so many unemployed, no medical insurance, low wage part time jobs... at home?
