George McGovern falls before planned TV appearance
Source: Associated Press

Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern has been hospitalized after falling and hitting his head while getting ready for a live interview on C-SPAN.

... McGovern fell outside of the Dakota Wesleyan University's McGovern Library in Mitchell, which is across the street from one of his homes. Witnesses say he was bleeding profusely but conscious and talking.

4. Damn sounds like he's going to die soon.
from what i've read about him he was so progressive he scared the pants out of the Nixon camp and right wing. What do you think about him if McG instead of Obama were president right now?

19. McGovern Is The Real Deal. Read this....
Edited on Sat Dec-03-11 12:31 AM by democrat2thecore
From an interview with him just today!

How is today's Democratic Party doing?

"I think it needs a little more backbone. I'm for President Obama and I hope he'll be re-elected. But I think both he and the Democrats in the Congress need a little dose of backbone-itis to stand for the kinds of things that a progressive liberal party should endorse."

How would you define a "McGovern liberal"?

A McGovern liberal is not ashamed of the federal government. It points to a record that's very impressive—Roosevelt's New Deal, Jack Kennedy's New Frontier, and Johnson's Great Society. I wish above all else right now the Democratic Party would come out for universal healthcare. A one-sentence bill: Congress hereby extends Medicare for all Americans.

22. Did it occur to anyone else that the byline of this thread
could have in all likelihood juxtaposed the name kerman hane with George McGovern? Just sayin.

No one more than I recognizes the levity of the OP article, but without good ol' kerm, I will be losing a great source of humor in my life. Kinda makes me weep, as it is now likely that I will have to wait until May, when the egocentric donald enters the race, before I will have quite as much to yuk it up about. Oh well, we all have our comb-overs to bear.

27. it was 22-year-old George McGovern

McGovern had been at 22 a decorated Army Air Force pilot who had flown 35 combat missions (the maximum number allowed), I urged the McGovern managers to film a couple of members of the flight crew telling how terrified they were the day McGovern, with two of his plane's four engines knocked out, somehow managed through skill and strength an emergency landing of his B-24 (which required a 5,000 foot landing strip) on a 2,200 foot runway on an island in the Adriatic.

Of course, no such spot ever saw the light of day. Later, I was told that a B-24 spot would have "complicated" or "stepped on" the campaign's message of the South Dakota senator as the candidate most critical of bombing in Vietnam.

I was furious at the sheer stupidity, the craven surrender of the values of patriotism and military valor to Richard M. Nixon, whose own service time was largely spent profitably playing poker.

But now historian Stephen Ambrose, who has moved the nation with his compelling accounts of the country's settling and of the ordinary Americans whose extraordinary personal sacrifice and bravery won World War II, has written "The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany 1944-45."

This is -- 30 years late -- the story of George McGovern, by all evidence a superb pilot and an unflappable leader who always thought first of his crew.

Even though he did not fly the same plane twice, McGovern's B-24 was always called the "Dakota Queen," after his young home-state bride Eleanor, to whom he has now been married for 57 years. (His wife Eleanor die in 2007)

32. Our past candidates seemed to understand the horrors of war, maybe because they were involved?
Edited on Sat Dec-03-11 11:52 AM by Old and In the Way
Kennedy, McGovern, Kerry all were vilified by the Right for their service...the one's who are supposedly "patriots'. Their war hero's are Ron Reagan, Dick Cheney, and Bush the Dimmer.

34. Thank You so much for the reminder....I'm
......reminded of Jimmy Carters military career vs/ Reagan's professional theatrical abilities....I do believe in civilian leadership over the military of course, however when a decorated military veteran advocates a well reasoned advocacy of peace we all should be humbled and listen as a nation....
