US visas 'deterring top students'

The president of Harvard University has warned that new visa procedures are putting off some of the most promising foreign students from coming to the US.

Larry Summers is also calling for simpler procedures to be introduced.

He says that in one case, a Chinese student who had flown home to attend a funeral had to wait five months for permission to return.

Harvard is in danger of losing some of its most promising students to other countries, Mr Summers added.

1. I am conflicted on this one.. Here's why..

Our country needs to undergo a metamorphosis, and that will have to include MORE of OUR kids going to college.. Classes are so hard to get into these days, even with excellent grades..

UCR, near me, has a HUGE Asian population, and even though there is nothing "wrong" with that, there really IS.. Rich Asian parents can afford to send their kids here, so naturally the tuition goes up for ALL, and the avaliability of classes shrinks for "local" kids..
Our son took Chemistry during the summer (so he would not have to take it in High school..he was a junior in HS..) That ONE class cost us $800.00 and the book(s) ran another $250.00..

I would love to see ALL the kids who want to go, get a chance to, and THEN if there are any slots left over, THOSE slots could go to foreign students ..
