Cheney Reaffirms Stand Against Abortion
5 minutes ago Add White House - AP to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) reaffirmed the Bush administration's staunch opposition to abortion, saying the issue was a nonpartisan question of protecting the "weakest members of our society."

"It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, male or female, black or white, ... north or south, east or west, all that matters is your respect for the claim of every life," Cheney said in a 10-minute speech Tuesday to the National Right to Life Committee (news - web sites) Educational Trust Fund.

"To be part of this cause is to believe that every mother carrying a life, that every child waiting to be born deserves understanding," he said.

<snip>

"President Bush has often expressed his commitment that in a compassionate society, every child be welcomed in life," Cheney said. "America still has some distance to travel before that hope is realized."

4. I guess ponying up some cash to take care of the children already here
is out of the question. The right loves an unborn baby, but says screw um the second they leave the womb. How these people can cut funding for after school programs and headstart and claim to love children is beyond me.

DCF Murder Arrest
4/20/2004

By Sarah Williamson/WCJB TV 20 News

As the investigation into the murder of a three-year-old Gainesville girl continues, records of her case with the Department of Children and Families have been released. Those records show a couple of major discrepancies on the part of DCF.

The report was released the same day as a worker at a private company helping with the case was forced to resign. The woman worked for Meridian Behavior Health Care. She was by no means a caseworker. But, she is someone who knew Quin-Shayla and her mother, and attempted to help them both just a few days before the girl was killed.

The former Meridian employee told us by telephone that she made several calls from her cell phone to try and tell the DCF something was wrong with three-year-old Quin-Shayla Gorden. DCF Spokesperson Tom Barnes says they never got the calls, "At no point did the Department receive any sort of credible evidence that there was any danger." The woman claims she called Quin-Shayla's caseworker at the Gainesville DCF office. The toddler's mother says she witnessed the calls.

But, when they were not returned, she was forced to return the girl to her father. Kenneth Little received custody of his daughter in February. Her mother had visitation rights while in rehab for a drug problem. According to Barnes, DCF workers say they believed Little's home was a safe place, "A close examination of the record will show that there were prudent actions taken to ensure Quin-Shayla's safety, but it simply failed."

8. and another: DCF cites progress in meeting children's needs over past 18 m
TALLAHASSEE · Florida's Department of Children & Families is touting a dramatic drop in the backlog of child abuse and neglect investigations, a higher adoption rate and better employee stability since Secretary Jerry Regier took over 18 months ago, in a progress report set to be released Friday.

Regier said the "cornerstones" of his approach to improving the embattled agency were increasing adoptions and decreasing children needing out-of-home care. DCF says adoptions rose by 21 percent in the last fiscal year, are on pace to rise again this year, and 6 percent fewer children needed out-of-home care.

"All along I have said that if we could reduce the number of children coming into the system, and increase and improve the number of children getting into permanent homes, that would be success," Regier told the AP, which obtained a copy of the report on Thursday.

A leading child abuse advocate questioned some of DCF's claims of vast improvement -- including a 118 percent increase in the number of neglect and abuse investigations completed within 60 days.

"There's a major difference between investigating a case, and just closing the file on the computer," said Karen Gievers, president of the Children's Advocacy Foundation.

Unfortunately, it took a murder charge to get these improvements in FL.

12. Headline should read "Against Abortions Rights"
This isn't about one's view of what abortion is. It's about if the state should prosecute women and their physicians for carrying out her wishes to terminate a pregnancy. If and when these prosecutions occur, I predict a radical swing to the pro-choice side.

I was all breathless in anticipation as to just what he'd say when I saw "Cheney" and "abortion" in the same headline.

15. What utter bullshit
"To be part of this cause is to believe that every mother carrying a life, that every child waiting to be born deserves understanding," he said.

Apparently that understanding doesn't extend to women "carrying a life" who didn't choose to do so and would like to terminate their preganancy.

only believes in killing the born. Geaze, if I had known this mass murderer was going to be in charge I would have stayed in the womb for the relative safety of it.
