Snyder asks Senate to preserve federal heating assistance

‘Winters in Michigan can be brutally cold’
By Eartha Jane Melzer
08.22.11 | 9:47 am

Governor Rick Snyder, together with state utility companies and social service agencies, is warning that federal heating assistance cuts proposed by the Obama administration would have disastrous effects across Michigan.

Congress is now considering President Barack Obama’s proposal to cut funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) by 50 percent.

The block grant program is a major part of the safety net in Michigan and the proposed cut would leave the state with $120 million less to help subsidize heating costs for 1.2 million low income households.

In a letter to the Senate subcommittee that is looking at the plan, Gov. Snyder said that people in Michigan will suffer if the proposal is adopted, telling them that Michigan “would have to either reduce the number of eligible recipients, or reduce the level of assistance to a point that would not cover one month of heating for this coming winter. As you know, winters in Michigan can be brutally cold.”

Just like repugs. All government is bad.... except for the parts of it that directly benefit you. They dont really get the concept that this is a team endeavor.

5. He needs to ask his energy based supporters to contact the other
rethugs they own and get them to do this - after all it will all eventually end up in their pockets anyhow.

Seriously, all these corporations etc. that are supporting the government cuts must not understand that without these programs their customers are gone. This goes for utility companies, retail stores, grocery stores, medical health providers, pharmaceuticals, etc. They are cutting their noses off to spite their face. Don't they see it?

9. Do you think it is a question of which rich friend's pockets?

I've wondered for a long time why they don't see it. Are they all competing amongst themselves to see who can get the most?

I've had trouble paying my utility bill a lot lately. And once you get behind a certain amount, they then require that you pay the entire bill. For instance, we were paying less than the whole bill and had built up a big balance due, which they tolerated, until one day we had to pay the whole thing to get our power back on.

Luckily we still had some credit left somewhere. Otherwise, it would still be off.

I was put on disability for CFIDS (elsewhere today and yesterday described as caused by stress -- and that is bullshit), and my husband is under-employed. My income was reduced to a third of what it was. We are under water on our mortgage, like many, and therefore cannot move. Our income no longer covers it all. Sort of like we're stuck.

I hope LIHEAP gets funded.

11. Sorry to hear about your situation. I have been in similar situations.
One small piece of advice on the utilities - ask them to tell you about the budget plan. I did that and was amazed that it helped my budget so much. Smaller payment each month as opposed to large winter bills I always got behind on. Hope this can help you.

19. Thanks. Will do that.
We don't have AC, so our summer bills shouldn't be quite as high.

I have always believed something was wrong with our utility bill, it is so high, but we can't find anything wrong. It's like electricity just leaks out somewhere. We have very few lights, very few lamps, and most of them are the new fluorescent bulbs. I don't even have a ceiling fixture in the kitchen, or a wall fixture in the bathroom -- just the overhead. So it's amazing to me.

BAY CITY — A settlement of a half million dollars has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit of Marvin E. Schur, a Bay City man who froze to death in his home in 2009.

Schur’s family filed the suit against Bay City and Bay City Electric Light & Power in October 2009. Schur, a 93-year-old World War II veteran, was found dead in his home at 1600 S. Chilson St. on Jan. 17, 2009. Autopsy results indicated he froze to death.

The city had turned off Schur’s electricity due to unpaid bills.

13. FWIW-
Mr Schur had the money to pay the bill, he just didn't have a way to get in to pay the bill.
The city shut off his power without knocking on his door first.

14. wait, guv! isn't there a free-market solution to this problem?
oh yeah, there is - it's letting people who can't pay the bills freeze to death. Still, beats having a federal assistance program, doesn't it? I mean, all those nasty deficits and outrageous uncontrolled spending... almost makes you want to raise some revenue - NOT!

I sure hope the people who voted for Snyder and the other teabaggers calling the shots these days think about how great their low low tax rates are when they're out of money, out of work, and out of their homes. It's going to be a very cold winter for a lot of us this year.
