Perry prayerfest shaping up to be a flop
Source: Salon

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's big prayerfest -- the Jesus-centric event that has attracted support from a range of extremist pastors -- is scheduled for this Saturday at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

But the AP checks in on The Response event and finds that, if preregistrations are a guide, it's shaping up to be a potentially embarrassing flop:

But with only 8,000 RSVPs for a stadium that seats 71,500 people, virtually no politicians planning to attend, and a slate of organizers who hold out-of-mainstream views on religious freedom, gay rights and even Adolf Hitler, the event has become a potentially risky gamble if Perry is serious about running for the White House.

Perry invited every governor in America to the event, but the only one to publicly commit to attending, Sam Brownback of Kansas, now seems to be waffling.

10. He also prayed for rain, and not only hasn't Texas gotten any ...
... but the tropical storm that appeared to be heading their way basically evaporated before it hit the coastline. It seems there's so much dry air over Texas, even the storms can't make it through.

If I subscribed to Perry's style of religion, I'd say either that God was mocking him or that Satan has his claws in Texas and won't let go. But being both non-religious and much nicer than many who are, I'll say simply that once you mess too much with the planet, it can be hard to get out of the hole you've dug for yourself.

I forgot the rationale that supposedly supported this amazing fact. I suspect that may be because I went into shock and/or starting looking around for the nearest exit as soon as I heard his premise.

15. We have been putting a whole lot of pressure on Brownback.
Now don't get me wrong, he does not give a flying shit what KEC says but he embarrassed himself when his thugs harassed us and Dan Choi for daring to carry flags to our rally. There was a lot of bad press, even the press finding photos of other events that he endorses with tons and tons of flags. Yes, a GLBT Equality group is really too dangerous to allow weapons (flag poles) on the steps outside his office. It is our Capitol building, there were about 3 officers for every one of us and they harassed us getting out of our cars. We are holding another rally sans flag poles, this Saturday because of this event in Houston and the previous harassment. Kansas NOW, who he also had harassed, is joining us. We have been getting a lot of press outlining him as being an associate of the most vile....those attending and speaking at the Perry event. I would not be surprised if he went to this anyway but it would not be a good move politically. His little marriage seminar, behind closed doors and at the taxpayers expense, and attempts to set up marriage rules and regs here has insulted even his most ardent supporters. Hee Hee. He is going to wish he has never messed with the uppity gays here. We are organized, we have been for quite some time, and we are not a small group anymore. We are loud and not going away. We Are Somebody!

Sorry, this is kinda a threadjack but I was on a roll........

18. I've been praying for this event to be a flop.
God always like me best.

Psst, Perry, just a friendly reminder: The manual says....

Matthew 6 (KJV)

1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

They are mammon worshiping Pharisees. Their holy trinity is MONEY, Ayn Rand and GREED!

They hate the poor and do everything in their power to destroy minorities, the sick and elderly all in the name of Jesus.

Teabaggers are the demon children of fox "news" and hate radio.

When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

57. 100°+ heat for a month does not fry your brain.......
...unless you didn't have much of one to begin with.

Our illustrious governor seems to have overestimated the number of morons out there,
and even Sam-I-am Brownback seems to be wanting to spend more time with his family
these days.

The God Squad of Texas will preaching to the choir, and the choir is about 1/10 as
big as Perry thought it was.

Now, if there was only a way to force him to face the music......

58. Was God invited?
If so, and he accepts, you'll know. When he arrives fire and brimstone may rain down on the stadium. The ground will probably open and swallow Rick Perry. Of course secular humanists, liberals and homosexuals will take the rap.

66. Wonder what the rent for the day is on that stadium. I guess religious bigots have raped
granny's bank account so much they can afford the place. I hope they lose their asses.

67. I credit Rachel Maddow for her excellent reporting on these nutcases
I think all the reasonable Christians have been scared away from this controversy.

Even Perry distanced himself from it somewhat, saying he was "a participant" and not one of the organizers.

75. Fake christians
I don't even capitalize the word because we all know they are fakes. Real Christians are a rare breed indeed. perry is going to lose big time because he insults the largest religion in the country Catholicism, with Hagee. he also insults his own with his vain, fake person, who knows if he's gay. I got a problem with perry, not his homosexuality or homosociality. He 's a loser, he's a texan, and America is sick to death of texans. He's also a confederate, he wants division. There is no way in hell he will win, I know the southern types, they won't ever vote for a gay man or percieved gay man.

No Texas bashing. There are many Texans here that are real DEMS. Perry managed to win with just over 30% of the vote. Far from a majority I should think.
