Rupert Murdoch's News International has been found by a parliamentary committee to have "deliberately" tried to block a Scotland Yard criminal investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World, the Guardian has learned.

The report by MPs from the all-party home affairs committee will be released on Wednesday and its publication has been moved forward in time for today's statement by prime minister David Cameron on the scandal.

The report's central finding comes a day after Rupert and James Murdoch testified before the culture, media and sport committee.

The home affairs committee report marks an official damning judgment on News International's actions.

David Cameron will today be the one in the firing line over the phone-hacking scandal amid fresh revelations that risk inflicting more damage on his government.

(snip)
In another blow to the Prime Minister, two top police officers told a parliamentary committee that Mr Cameron’s chief of staff Ed Llewellyn asked Scotland Yard not to raise the issue of hacking during a Downing Street briefing last year.

Former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, who quit at the weekend, and former Assistant Commissioner

John Yates, who stepped down on Monday, told the Home Affairs Select Committee they believed Mr Llewellyn wanted to avoid "compromising" Mr Cameron.

4. Report: Unauthorised tapping or hacking of mobile communications
http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/home-affairs-committee/news/110720-phone-hacking-report/

The Committee “deplores” News International’s attempt to “deliberately thwart” the original investigation into phone hacking in 2005-06 but also states that the police set aside a huge amount of material that could have identified other perpetrators and victims.

The Committee agrees with John Yates’s own assessment that his 2009 review of this investigation was “very poor”, that he did not ask the right questions and that he was guilty of a “serious misjudgement”.

The Committee criticises Andy Hayman’s cavalier attitude towards his contacts with those in News International who were under investigation which, even if entirely above board, risked seriously undermining confidence in the impartiality of the police, and accuses him of deliberate prevarication in order to mislead the Committee. It urges the swift and thorough investigation of allegations that payments were made to police officers by the media, which will help to establish whether or not such payments may have influenced police inquiries into phone hacking.

The Committee welcomes DAC Sue Akers’s decision to contact all potential victims of phone hacking by the News of the World as part of the current investigation, but is alarmed that only 170 have as yet been informed. At this rate it would take years to inform all of the several thousands of people potentially affected. The Committee therefore recommends that extra resources are allocated to her investigation, by the Government directly if necessary.

Rupert Murdoch's News International company has been found by a parliamentary committee to have "deliberately" tried to block a Scotland Yard criminal investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World.

The report from MPs on the all-party home affairs committee will be released on Wednesday morning and its publication has been moved forward in time for today's statement by prime minister David Cameron on the scandal.

8. Oh I believe so to but the problem is so far
the investigation is only just starting and they might not find anything.
It would be funny though if during the investigation evidence emerged that they were doing other things like coordinating in secret with a certain political party to shape news stories to support that party and or providing free air time via "interviews" to a person in office or seeking office for that same political party in order to skirt campaign laws.

9. Now, can we please figure out the extent of his damage?
And you can bet your ass I am talking about the 2000 elections, the Wars and all the relationships Murdoch has and have had with all heads of state. Steven Harper, David Cameron, George Bush.

How deep is the rabbit hole?

12. in the same breath he said he didn't have anything to do with what some
individuals did. it was horrible and he didn't tell them to do it. yet he promoted the guy that was in charge of the company that hacked into that floormat company. He didn't fire him, he promoted him. To me that means this crap is approved of and encouraged. And he knows about it. And he is sorry, but not sorry that he did it.

Rupert Reptile...

Edit for a brand new word...Rupetile, Cold blooded, black hearted, selfish, greedy, venomous, destructive, critter from down under, who acts like another critter that is from Waaaaaaaaaay down under and who reportedly has red antlers and a red pointy tail. The Rupetile can whine on demand and preys on the poor the weak and the stupid.

Rupetile is such a new word/thing that the spell check don't even know about it.

14. The Murdochs are liars....
...they're trying anything to get out of this scandal. They knew, and they cashed in on that knowledge. No amount of apologies, lies, or misdirection is going to get them out of this. Their empire should be toppled and destroyed and they should be fined every dime of the billions they own. Make them paupers and maybe the motherfuckers will understand, you don't cheat and get away with it. Take every fucking dime they have!
