Ohio House approves abortion ban after heartbeat

Wed Jun 29, 2011 12:56am BST

By Jo Ingles

COLUMBUS (Reuters) - The Ohio House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detectable, which can be as early as six weeks.

The House voted 54 to 43 for the ban, along party lines, with most Republicans voting in favor.

If enacted, the law would be a challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling which upheld a woman's right to an abortion until the fetus is viable outside the womb, usually at 22-24 weeks.

Republican Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder said he knows this bill will face a court challenge.

10. yes... we lost everything and lost big last November
the Republicans are extreme and pushing as much crap through as they can. They're trying to sell our infrastructure, they've already allowed drilling in State parks, passed an anti-union bill much like WI, they are putting the public employee's pension at risk, privatizing everything, cutting medicaid, local government funds, etc. They suck and there are absolutely no checks and balances.

3. Oh nice, where are the JOBS, Republicans?
I don't want to see women carry a baby to term if they choose not to. But, of course, Republicans still think women are not entitled to make decisions about their own bodies, men, Republican men, are in charge, and don't you women forget it!!!'

Proof for all men and women everywhere was this legislation.

6. Once again, issues of infrastructure, jobs, education, and health care are ignored.
They want to talk about abortion, banning gay marriage, stadiums, and in our state, repealing the seat-belt law. It's Republicans. It's what they do.

12. Recall?
Hi, everyone! My first post on DU. I am from the south so not sure how Ohio state laws work. I've seen the Wisconsin coverage but I feel like the news coverage for stuff going on in other states that were hijacked by the teaparty has been abysmal. Can any of these stooges be recalled? After the union-busting bill there has to be enough anger within the state to recall some of the legislature. The Governor's poll numbers are down the tube. Is recall for any of these idiots an option?

dead with hangers close by. It's gonna happen and unlike pre 1973, we have social networking. Gonna get nasty folks. Brought to you by the GOP.

32. doesn't matter to them...
the wives of peons, like us, will die due to botched abortions. Their wives will have the money to go overseas and get a proper one. It is class warfare, but people don't want to own up to it.

27. I believe this SCOTUS would overturn Roe in a heartbeat (no pun intended).
Mr. Original Intent Scalia would say neither the original Framers nor those who adopted the 14th amendment ever imagined they were making bans on abortion illegal.

Whatever her other shortcomings, Sandra Day O'Connor was the only thing in the SCOTUS in her day standing between women and back room butchers.

28. Apparently, the God of the RW cares more about a fetal heartbeat.
At least Sandra Day O'Connor always insisted that every abortion ban contain an exception for the health of the mother.

Without that, legislators are playing God (which happens to violate the Bible, but Republicans never want to deal with issues like that).
