After New York Vote, Bachmann Suggests Constitutional Amendment Against Gay Marriage
Source: Fox News

Fresh off a formidable showing in an Iowa preference poll of 2012 Republican presidential candidates, Rep. Michele Bachmann on Sunday said that as president she would offer a federal constitutional amendment to list marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

However, the Minnesota congresswoman said it's also up to the states to decide whether they permit same-sex marriage.

Bachmann, who has staked out much of the social conservative ground in the GOP primary race, was threading a thin needle in explaining that her views are not inconsistent on gay marriage. She was speaking after New York's Legislature this weekend approved same-sex marriage, making it the sixth state to allow it.

* * *
But Bachmann added that it's not a contradiction to pursue a federal constitutional amendment that would trump state law, and if she were president she would do so. A constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds vote of Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states.

2. She wants to focus on same sex marriage as this economy drags along?
Sounds like a loser of a campaign strategy to me.

15. It sounds like a winner of a strategy to me, if you're GOP
The Republicans are in a bind.

They know, or at least they SHOULD know if they've got any interest in macroeconomics (which is a very large if, and probably unjustifiable) their "cut taxes, cut spending" plan won't work nor can it work. The famous Kennedy tax cut, which DID work and is the one the Republicans use to prove tax cuts boost the economy, had two features no Republican tax cut ever had: the ending rate was very, very high--70 percent of after-deduction income on the highest earners, and it left enough money in the Treasury to allow a stimulative amount of federal investment. The tax cut the Republicans will never, ever use as an example is the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act, which slashed the GDP by 4.5 percent and caused 10.5 percent unemployment. (And the strange thing is, at this juncture if we reinstated the tax code enshrined in the ERTA the economy probably WOULD recover. But that's what happens when one party is so craven about tax cuts they manage to reduce federal income taxes to the point half the country isn't paying them anymore.)

So, since their economic plans are the equivalent of fighting fires by hooking the hose to the gas tank, they're campaigning on social issues.

13. Republicans hate "big government"...
Edited on Sun Jun-26-11 04:57 PM by NYC Liberal
except when it comes to abortion, same-sex marriage, pot, and the right to die — among others

They also love "states' rights" until a state decides to allow one of the above. Then they scream for the federal government to do something.

Not going to happen given today's political climate and if you're against gay marriage the climate is getting worse for you.

Q3JR4.

17. She is going back to her only MN State Senate issue
That is all she pushed and what helped her get elected to her house district (MN6). I am not surprised she is dusting this off and making a push on the federal level.
