Muslim Brotherhood unveils party to contest parliamentary vote (Egypt)
Source: AP/France24

Egypt's once outlawed Muslim Brotherhood has announced the formation of a political party that will contest up to half of parliament's seats in September elections.

The Muslim Brotherhood said on Saturday it will contest up to half the parliamentary seats in elections scheduled for September.

But the group said it will not field a candidate for the position of president in an election due to held after the parliamentary vote.

The Muslim Brotherhood is regarded as the most organised political force in Egypt after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in February and the dissolution of his National Democratic Party.

1. They were previously only able to field independants.

2. It's dishonest for them to continue to say they do not "seek power".
Controlling education and how people think about social issues is an indirect form of taking power, and they know it.

4. Sounds like Rethugs adopted their philosophy when they decided
it's best to do home schooling and protect them from all those social evils promoted in public school.

3. I was afraid of this. It is my greatest fear that the radicals will take over
these fledgling democracies in the Middle East. Sometimes one dictator beats another hands down. Women of Egypt I pray for you that these monsters do not take over your country like they did Iraq, and then take away your sovereign rights as people and individuals of worth.

5. I hope they are not successful
in any major way. Egypt will have to deal with it's religious fundamentalists, just as we have to deal with ours. They will have a seat at the table but hopefully will not control the whole meal.

This was one of the RW talking points that was used to criticize Obama for not supporting Mubarek - that the Muslim Brotherhood would take over and turn Egypt into a restrictive fundamentalist regime.

I don't really see it happening because, as far as I know, there isn't a Khameni type religious leader in Egypt who has that kind of power.
