78 Troops Killed This Month in Iraq - 561 wounded
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040413/ap_on_re_mi_ea/us_iraq_casualties&cid=540&ncid=1480

WASHINGTON - At least 78 U.S. troops were killed and 561 were wounded in Iraq (news - web sites) in the first 12 days of April, a senior Army general said Tuesday.

It is quickly becoming the deadliest month since the Iraq war began in March 2003. Since then, at least 674 U.S. troops have died, according to the Pentagon (news - web sites)'s figures.

Lt. Gen. Richard Cody, the deputy chief of staff for operations, said 41 of the 78 killed during April were Army soldiers; most of the rest were Marines. Of the 561 wounded troops, 297 were soldiers, Cody said.

The general also predicted that the flare-up in violence this month would soon ease, although he stressed that Iraq would continue to suffer periodic surges of violence for a long time.

18. Remember, Rumsfeld answered this question...
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 02:57 PM by VolcanoJen
I'm paraphrasing a bit here...

"Secretary Rumsfeld, do you anticipate further US casualties, even after the capture of Saddam Hussein?"

Rumsfeld: "Will more coalition soldiers be killed? You bet!!!"

:grr: I'm so FUCKING angry. :grr:

Why should I see it? That's an older Steven Seagal/Kurt Russell film, yes? I tend to skip over Seagal titles; why do you bring it up?

23. According to Krazy Killer Kimmitt
"said most of those who fought U.S. troops last week were members of al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army and the Sunni Mohammed's Army, an organization widely suspected to be an umbrella group of former intelligence agents, army and security officials and members of the banned Baath party. In Abu Ghraib, they included Sunni extremists, criminal gang members and unemployed youths"

I guess the only people not fighting us are orphaned children, petty hooligans and Mother Theresa's Order of Nuns.

2. Interesting little story about Fort Campbell on the 'Today Show'
this a.m. Showed contrasting videos of Boo$h visits and mentioned that parents are starting to speak out against the war.

Of course the segment ended with ONE soldier not too convincingly stating he supports his president and the war.

3. 561 wounded? Wow that is a lot
I know someone will point out the ratio thing but they used to tell us that each injury takes 3 to 4 other soldiers out of the battle that is 1,683 to 2,244.

...considering that his troops will sustain casualties as long as we are in Iraq. The Centcom commanders were obviously disturbed yesterday. I doubt anyone there is getting much sleep. Two more "surges of violence" like this before the election and I'll think there will be a regime change here.

One thing political pundits have noted is that it is neutralizing the impact and direction of the television ad campaign. The Iraqis are starting to control American television content and have knocked the chimp off of his freebee number one spot. This is one reason for the press conference, a desparate attempt to turn the media content wars around.

Let me predict that in the first hundred words, these will be mumbled.

Weapons of mass destruction, thugs, criminals, terrorists, brave soldiers, stay the course, temporary setbacks, resolve, coalition partners, freedom, bravery.

Its hard to believe Rove et al were not alive in the thirties and under the tutelage of Goebbels, Heydrich and Himmler.

6. I'm skeptical
about their motivation for releasing the wounded numbers. I think the numbers should be available....but

It's annoying to me that they USE THESE numbers to generate sympathy for our Military and the War... while ignoring what we are doing to the Iraqis. Denying the reports of the women and children killed, for instance.

As if since our soldiers die/are wounded while trying to kill Iraqis - killing more Iraqis is justified.

9. I wonder if even one of these soldiers' bodies . . .
in these "supposed" metal tubes they are shipped in, have even one flag on them?

Well, they have come up with another way to save money for the defense contractors. No more draping of flags over the bodies as well as no pictures of these bodies coming home. Can you imagine what this saves them?

CAN'T be sustained very long with a small volunteer military. Look for WHOLE National Guard Divisions being called up for deployment.

25. We were losing 175 a day in Vietnam, (including my brother)
These numbers are really low; in post war Germany we were losing far more the the "werewolves"

26. But think how much better body armor troops today have
Sorry about your brother.

Wonder what our losses would be without modern body armor.

And we are actually exceeding the early years of the Vietnam conflict.

We also had many more in-country troops during the heavy fighting in Vietnam. I'd love to see a ratio comparison.

28. W/ all due respect to your brother...but that is absolutely not true...
we were never averaging 175 a day in Vietnam...I think the max/day was 40 (which is still horrible!!)...if we had been avg. 175 then that would have been 63000/year!!

This is getting remarkable close to Vietnam numbers...for the month of April...

As far as post-war Germany, I have heard nothing like that, do you have a link to substantiate...from all that I've seen, we lost very few post war in Germany and Japan...

36. Previous combat figures...
Edited on Wed Apr-14-04 07:08 AM by Dead_Parrot
Vietnam averaged 17.7 fatalities w. 46.7 wounded /day,
Iraqnam averages "just" 2 fatalities w. 8.8 wounded /day
(averaged over the total conflict)

For this month the averages are 6 fatal, 10.6 wound /day: Still a waste of life, but not nearly as bad.

http://lunaville.org/warcasualties/Summary.aspx
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2003-04-20-cover-usat_x.htm

Edit: 8.6 /day for this month, by Global Sec's figures.

30. This website lists 94 US dead in first 11 days of April
Someone else posted this site yesterday. It lists name, rank, date of death, unit, and manner of death. It lists some who have now died from previous wounds, which may be missing from the 78 number. It also doesn't include the 2 or 3 who died today.
