McCain on talk of run with Kerry: 'No, no and no'
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/04/11/mccain.veep/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Trying to stamp out speculation that he might consider joining Democratic Sen. John Kerry's ticket, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona insisted Sunday that he would not do so under any circumstances.

2. I don't even like him
nor his beliefs in the republican party. I would have asked for my money back from John Kerry if he picked him.

That's exactly how I wanted to respond to McCain response. I dislike the man, a lot.

7. How did this McCain on the Democrat ticket get started? No democrat in...
or out of his right mind would want a Republican on our ticket.

I'd like to know what Kerry thinks about all this. I'll bet he thinks it is as silly as I do!

8. I think the Kerry camp keeps it floated
for some interesting research into freeper loyalties and its taken the media eye off the real candidates.

9. McCain may be a Republican, but he is a good guy
Though I don't agree with all of his politics, I admire him as a great person. I like him for his willingness to admit he was wrong and apologize, his non-partisanship and willingness to disagree with his party, because he is more pro-environmental then most Republicans, and for his pushing campaign finance reform.

23. McCain, imho, is a very honorable man.
His position of pro-free-trade is the reason *I* couldn't support him for VP.

10. This Should End It
This should end all the speculation. McCain was about as clear as he could be. I actually thought that it was a good idea. Since he said, "NO, No, No....", I will take him at his straight-shooting word. So, this leaves us with the top candidates being (in no particular order): Richardson, Edwards, Vilsak (spelling?), and Gephardt. I do think that maybe Clark has creeped onto the list provided that Kerry wants to send a strong national security message and provided that Kerry thinks that Gephardt can't really help with Missouri.

11. McCain said Sunday that he believes Bush "deserves re-election."
McCain said Sunday that he believes Bush "deserves re-election."

"Have we agreed on every issue? Of course not. We didn't agree on every issue when we ran against each other in a primary," he said.

"I am not embarrassed to say that John Kerry is a friend of mine, but I want George Bush to be re-elected president of the United States."

From the CNN link posted.

Bush "deserves reelection"?? Barf!!!!!!!!!!!!

12. I hate Tim Russet
and Press the Meat. I was a volunteer for McCain's campaign in late 98 and 99, i'm fan of his but i gotta tell you, when i ever found out he was not just supporting * but actually co-chairing his reselection bid i was pisssed off beyond belief. The part of me that really likes him makes me think that he's up to something, you know something we would like that the gop would hate but the other part of me wants all of my fucking campaign contributions to him back along with all the time i put in.

15. We didn't invent Democracy, but we defend it.
I don't know everything there is to know about the man, but, for a Con, I like McCain. I think he's the only honest conservative.

I agree with him on some things, and disagree on a lot of others. Certainly, I'd rather a good liberal as the VP. But if the issue is beating the snot out of King George, McCain would do it. And I think he would be a lot more acceptable as VP than most lefties would think.

24. So, only "lefties" want a Democratic Vice President?
McCain does appear to be slightly more reasonable than many Republicans. That's just because the Republicans have gotten so much worse. Once upon a time, there were Republicans who appeared to be reasonable people although one disagreed with them on most issues. The gang in charge now have no redeeming traits.

McCain is supporting Bush in the next election. Let him.

If we got a Republican VP under a President Kerry--just how long do you think Kerry would be allowed to live?

16. Who keeps pushing this stupid rumor?
I don't get it. Do the media whores just assume that the Democrats are so hard up for active members that finding a VP candidate from within the party is impossible? That the only way a Democrat can win is by running as a republican?

Sweet Smelly Jaysus.

I like McCain right where he is, one of the few decent principled republicans showing the rest of the party that it is, in fact, possible to be a GOP without becoming total slime.

17. Agreed. Stupidest VeepLust Story Ever.
Why on earth would the Democratic Party, with hopes of setting itself up for eight-twelve-sixteen years at the Executive Branch, put a Republican a heartbeat away?

You nailed it, Organism. The media during this campaign has been lazy, unimaginative, and has often taken Rovian fantasies and run with them, just because they don't seem to know any better anymore.

Now, I say let's nominate Edwards on that ticket, and be done with it. :D

18. Good Question
The earliest mention I can find of the possibility is from something written by Roger Simon in _US News_ (no link) on, I think, March 8. Simon refers to it on his blog on March 10, and it's directly after this that the notion started popping up on newspapers and telivision.

http://www.rogersimon.com/archive/004222.html

It interesting though to look into later references to it, particularly things like a New York Times story that referred to "new survey" that including McCain's name as a possible VP choice, but without ever mentioning who commissioned the survey.

Perhaps Simon, who was a reporter covering McCain's run for President in 2000, floated the idea and other picked up on it and decided to run with it.

28. Good point, could be an attempt to weaken McCain's standing in the GOP
His reputation represents an internal threat to the bush dynasty, and this attempt to associate him with his political opposition could be aimed at alienating him from the base. Then, in the next open republican primary, when Jeb is running against McCain for the nom, the bush clan will pull out the "McCain is practically a Democrat!" line.

22. Maybe yes and maybe no.
After McCain began to come out against Bush, back around the time whats-his-name became independent and threw the (house, senate?) to the dems, there was a lot of talk about McCain becoming the independent candidate, or switching to the democrats.

I thought it was a teriffic idea, simply because I saw him as principled and a welcome addition to the party, even though he's quite conservative.

Odd, really, that the two best candidates in 2000 (McCain and Bradley) didn't survive the primaries.
