Actress Elizabeth Taylor dead at 79
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 08:48 AM by onehandle
Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, one of the most alluring actresses of the 20th century, died on Wednesday at age 79, her publicists said.

She died at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles surrounded by her four children after having been hospitalized six weeks ago with congestive heart failure, a statement from publicist Sally Morrison said.

"My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world," son Michael Wilding said in a statement.

Elizabeth Taylor raised millions for the fight against AIDS/HIV, and was a tireless advocate for HIV's "invisible" victims long before it was fashionable to do so.

Rest in peace, Luv. And thank you.

But Elizabeth Taylor did far more in her life than collect sparkly jewelry.

Please don't disrespect her.

113. I read something she said (or wrote, I forget which) about her jewelry collection that I really
appreciated. She was never in it for the ego. She regarded herself as a mere temporary custodian of these beautiful objects, charged with taking care of them and treasuring them and enjoying them while she was fortunate enough to give them a good home, knowing they would inevitably move on to other hands after hers. You know that huge, emerald-cut Krupp diamond she often wore? She had it on in one of her White Diamonds perfume ads. When someone would admire it, the first thing she'd do is take it off and let them try it on, just for the sheer joy of playing with it. She published a book about her jewel collection with a mind toward sharing these fabulous things with her fans. She was really humble about it. She saw herself as just another brick in the ongoing footpath of the various jewels of which she was caretaker at the moment.

I'm a jewelry nut myself, although at my level, collecting photos of stuff like that is the best I can do (you should see MY fabulous collection of pages ripped out of magazines!!! WOOHOOOO!!! I like pretty things. So sue me.) so I just really loved that about her. She appreciated jewelry as art and craftsmanship as well as prettiness and value and sentimentality. More power to her!

And she spent so much of her life, and a lot of her own fortune, trying to bring attention to the AIDS crisis when the likes of PRESIDENT ronald reagan, the most powerful man in the world, shied away like a chickenshit and hid behind denial and political homophobia. AND she spent her theatrical career bringing brilliant talent and artistry to the stage and the screen - inspiring art and drama lovers everywhere. Hell, her very existence even meant full employment for the gossip industry for decades. She kept the wolves away from the door for many many many many people around the world.

She was some kinda gal. She deserves everything good that's said about her, and she suffered enough throughout her life that I'd guess she burned off more than the average share of Purgatory time.

May she rest in peace and eternal beauty.

131. Lovely post, thank you.
Nice to hear that she viewed herself as the caretaker of her jewels. Funny that you should mention the Krupp diamond. ABC showed segments of several interviews Barbara Walters had with Elizabeth. In one of them Barbara admired the ring and Elizabeth promptly took it off so Barbara could try it on.

She had a self deprecating humor and a loud, bawdy laughter. Her friends said that she loved to have fun and was a loyal friend to them.

I think that all the years that she dedicated to the AIDS cause probably shaved a few years of purgatory. :D

I'm not one to be dazzled by celebrities but Elizabeth Taylor was fascinating to me for some reason. She was strikingly beautiful even as a child and let's not forget her founding AMFAR after Rock Hudson died -- a brave thing to do during the Reagan years.

Go with the goddess, dear lady.

57. Yes Very Courageous in that era, using her popularity and wealth
to do good for those, like me, who needed, and still do need, empathy, understanding and public statements of support to stand against the seemingly unending demonizing us for who we are. I was not courageous and it took me decades to come out, and speak up. Now I am happy that I did and that people like her paved the way for people like me to step out into the spotlight! Thank you Elizabeth Taylor for being you.

67. Yep, back then it was treated like leprosy.
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 11:46 AM by Beacool
It was considered the "gay curse" and most politicians wanted to sweep it under the rug. Elizabeth and a few others saw what it was doing to Hollywood. So many people who were involved in the industry, not just actors, were dying at an alarming rate. She and a few courageous others decided to do something about it and they formed AMFAR.

I was never a huge fan of Liz as an actress, but no one can deny her humanitarian efforts. I'm sure that right now she's in Heaven, probably deciding whether to hang out on Michael Todd's cloud or Richard Burton's (pick both, Liz).

90. Back then it was horrible but there was still a lot of (and is) confusion
about the disease. I replied to Riverman about my friend and old room mate who died of AIDS (he found out he had HIV/AIDS when awoke 30 days after he slipped into a coma in the er)
My family were upset with me for sometime that I would (in their words) "put my kids at risk by having a room mate w/AIDS" when he was putting himself at risk being around young children that could bring home a virus he couldnt recover from.

That was 10yrs ago
He died at 36yrs old because he couldnt afford medication co-pays, he had Medicare.

Cheers

132. That is heartbreaking. He died so young.
Thank goodness he had you. So many of them in the early days had no one. People were so afraid and ignorant of the disease that they would shun their own family members. Did you ever read the book or watch "And the Band Played On"? The book was written by journalist Randy Shilts. He found out that he was HIV positive while he was in the process of writing the book. He died of AIDS a few years later.

You are a good person for having taken care of your roommate.

Monty Clift was gay but, in the closet. She loved people no matter who they chose to love. Coming out on behalf of AIDS was a very courageous thing to do.

140. Yes, she had many gay friends.
Montgomery Clift was going through a rough patch when they filmed together "A Place in the Sun". He was confused about his sexuality and she was there for him. She became a dear friend and he had just left her house the night that she had the disfiguring accident that impacted his career. I hope that she sees him in Heaven.

88. Dear Riverman -- I am so sorry for what you are going through..
10yrs ago I had a room mate w/full blown AIDS, we were very close friends. I learned a lot from him. A man who never gave up despite the odds against him, he wanted to be a father, but couldnt (contracted age 20 1991) but thankfully he found love with a woman (he was bi-sexual) who had children and became not only a Dad, a Grandfather and University grad before the rug was pulled out from under him at the young age of 36.

 I am still angry about his passing because he would still be alive if he could afford the co-pay on his medication cocktail that he needed to survive. But the years of going on and off of it and scrapping by eventually took their toll.

RIP Elizabeth Taylor (and Mike N)

Cheers

Sandy

109. Thanks, but I'm not HIV pos, I was lvving in fear of coming out. Other
people many decades before were courageous in stepping into the public square to fight for our rights. It was the environment of hatred and fear that I grew up in and my lack of courage that kept me from coming out and speaking up as others did, like Elizabeth Taylor. I am very happy now being me, fully. Was married, now best friends with ex and raised two of the most wonderful young people who were totally accepting and loving of me when I came out to them in recent years.

Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 06:01 PM by axollot
wasnt straight by the age of 3.
He was able to come out to me at age 13 and to everyone else w/full support of family/extended family and friends. He's lucky but I never wanted him to live a lie. When he "officially" came out to me he cried, asking why he wasn't "normal" broke my damn heart hearing him say that because he *IS* normal!

All the support sometimes isnt enough but finally he feels "normal" is a popular, straight A high school student at 17yrs of age. He beat himself up over his sexuality for a long time though.

Cheers

But every now and then I watch National Velvet again. Elizabeth Taylor was a beautiful child (and woman), but the character she played in National Velvet had guts and honesty we can all aspire to; the same can be said for the mother in the film.

in the first "Flintstones" movie! She took herself seriously NOT AT ALL. You couldn't help but like her.

I covered a few things involving her. Various awards, appearances, hospital releases, and her 60th birthday bash when she rented out the front half of Disneyland for the evening. HILARIOUS and fun! And she enjoyed every minute - of every one of those 60 years, and urging everyone else to seize life and enjoy it to its fullest. She was nice to everyone and charming to us annoying, ever-present press people.

You just couldn't help but like her.

26. Elizabeth was a goddess
When she took up the HIV/AIDS cause, she did a tremendous service to the world. That day, she came to deserve every gemstone in her collection.
It is important to know that her AIDS work got done by her own hands, she did not delegate that duty, she had the thought to be of help, and then she went and did it. The first time she ever actually handled a check or did any banking personally was the first time she collected a check for AIDS, which was the same day she thought to do so.
It is easy to forget now that what she did was an act of courage and love that many others were too fearful to take on. She did so much good. So early on.
Also, Elizabeth Taylor was a gifted and wonderful actress. First and last, she was that, an actor, a damn good one.
Love and thoughts to her surviving family and friends.

37. I believe I talked to her once... on the phone
When she was calling the Neverland Valley Ranch to speak to Michael Jackson. She was so very nice on the phone. One thing about working for a California Answering Service, is the amount of celebs you get to talk to..Its too bad our company went out of Business. I have many memories of that place, and she was part of them!

45. I praise her sense of loyalty and compassion
Those beautiful violet eyes were the window to a soul that stood by two friends in deep trouble, Rock Hudson and Michael Jackson, when many others in the public eye either stood silent or turned away from them and the issues that surrounded their publicly displayed problems.
Finding a friend in life that will stand by you no matter what is rare enough for us "little people" who never have to deal with the media circus celebrity life brings. Her children had a very special mother who set a wonderful example. R.I.P.

Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 11:35 AM by VermeerLives
Think of all the people who grew up on "National Velvet", for example. She was capable of such a range of emotions in her films, from "Butterfield Eight" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" to "Cleopatra" and "The Sandpiper".

We recently watched "Cleopatra" (which almost bankrupted Fox Studios), with its great cast hauntingly beautiful musical score (one of the best, ever) by Alex North. They don't make epics like this anymore, and remember, this was all before computer graphics!!

I also loved Taylor in "The Sandpiper", a real adult love story, with another great score by Johnny Mandel. "The Shadow of Your Smile" must be one of the most beautiful love songs in all of cinema. Taylor was so, so lovely in "The Sandpiper"; remember those lavender leather pants and the chartreuse green sweater? Wow!!

She was a great film star, her private life aside. There will never be another Liz.

72. larger than life but a tiny woman
Some years back I went to see The Lion King on Broadway. It was an evening performance and I got great seats 5 rows from the front stage left. Just before the curtain went up there was a commotion in the back of the house. People were clapping and hollering. This group of people walked down to the front of the house center stage front row. It was Elizabeth Taylor and Elton John and their entourage of about 8 people. I remember thinking how tiny she was and how much taller he appeared next to her. Elton John is 5ft. 4 inches tall so you can imagine how tiny she really was. She was an iconic celebrity ranking up there with Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, James Dean and Michael Jackson. I miss her already.

100. Yes, she was little. I saw her at a cast party for Burton"s Hamlet when it was on Broadway.
Which I remember well because I was 8 months pregnant with my second child. The girlfriend of one of the cast members invited me and I went so I could see Taylor and in particular Burton, whom I thought was divine. I was disappointed with Burton, who looked slovenly and as if he had been stuffed into his street clothes. I remember hearing her ask him to get her a scotch and water...

104. Absolutely
A 1960 $40 million dollar film and what a spectacle it was. So naughty for back then, what with Liz's eyes all doctored up with that makeup that everyone copied FOR YEARS. It was the movie where she and Burton got the hots for each other, and you can see the chemistry on screen. It does have some goofy lines, but definitely worth the watch.

My favorite is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The phenomenal bedroom scene between Maggie and Brick I recall is around TWENTY-TWO MINUTES LONG with no break in shooting. Taylor and Newman are in the frame the entire time, something that I wonder whether we even have actors today who could accomplish that.

The most beautiful woman of my time has passed. No boob job. Violet eyes. Built like a brick shithouse.

What a gal. What a character. And what a life she did lead. May she rest in peace.

and they will keep her with us -- wonderful films -- !!

Most of all, I remember how she stood up for Rock Hudson and entirely changed

the disgraceful disrespect for AIDS patients -- and I think that also helped

America come to its senses in ending a few thousand years of religious teachings

that have been so abusive to homosexuals. Not that we're there yet --

Love to Elizabeth for all of that --

and to the many others who have worked for human rights --

112. She was beautiful inside & out. I loved her spunkiness -- remember when she was Sen. Warner's
wife?! When they both were interviewed by Barbara Walters at their farm in Virginia, I loved Liz's candor; what you see is what you get.

But the movie I thought depicted her true fun-loving, mischievous personality (at least in my own mind) was "Between Friends". It was an HBO movie from 1983 starring both Liz & Carol Burnette. Liz's character stole the show.

And what a humanitarian Liz was. This woman knew what love for her fellow beings was all about. She was a wonderful person.

127. I had a vision when I heard about her death this morning
Liz went up to Heaven (or the Afterlife) and was greeted by a long line of people who had died of AIDS, waiting to thank her for everything that she did on their behalf. Rock Hudson was in the lead, of course.

Goddess bless you, Liz. You were one of a kind.

136. R.I.P. Ms. Taylor
She really was extraordinary. An incredible actress who was not content to rest on her laurels. An AIDS activist when it was NOT acceptable to be one and an anti-war activist. She will be missed.
