McClatchy Newspapers COLUMBUS, Neb. — A district court judge said Tuesday that no sentence he gave a 34-year-old Columbus woman who assisted in the suicide of her boyfriend last summer would relieve the sorrow and grief suffered by the man’s family and friends.
“All agree this case is tragic,” Platte County District Court Judge Robert Steinke told Jennifer Peters while sentencing her to five years probation for assisting in the suicide of 34-year-old Kyle Adams at the couple’s home Aug. 2.
“If only we could turn the clock back, we would,” said Steinke while addressing a courtroom gallery that included Adams’ parents and friends. “No sentence I can give will undo the harm or the grief suffered by the families involved. I wish I could.”
Assisting suicide is a felony punishable by a maximum of five years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine or both. There is no minimum sentence.
