White House announces new appointees to faith council
Edited on Fri Feb-04-11 06:40 PM by cal04
Source: CNN

The White House announced a dozen appointments to its faith advisory council on Friday, with the leader of the nation’s largest evangelical group and the head of the nation’s leading Christian denomination serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people are both on the list.

National Association of Evangelicals President Leif Anderson and Nancy Wilson, head of the and Metropolitan Community Church - the nation’s largest denomination expressly serving LGBT Americans - are among the appointees to the panel, which was launched by President Barack Obama in 2009.

Lynne Hybels, wife if megachurch pastor Bill Hybels – who leads the Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago, Illinois – is also on the list.

The White House also named Rabbi Julie Schonfeld, Executive Vice President of the Rabbinical Assembly and prominent Jewish organizational leader Susan Stern to the advisory council, which is officially called the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Stern was appointed to serve as chair of the council.

1. Well, the current system does require
boatloads of faith, ya' know. You really have to believe so much in order for it to continue functioning at all.

... just sayin'.

3. I don't understand why a secular nation like ours has a faith council in the first place.
Edited on Fri Feb-04-11 06:46 PM by county worker
I mean should we also have a non believers council to go along with it? It's like if you say you have a religious faith you get better representation. I like the idea of keeping the faithful off my back!

8. That's because there is no strong left any more.
With the lack of leftist influence, the radicals and fundies fill the void.

15. Yes. I agree with that thought.

So many don't understand the need for a left to act as a counter balance to the trend toward the right.

Without a strong left the center becomes closer to the extreme right.

When I see what is going on in Egypt I can't help but feel like this country would never rise up like that!

9. Agree & when did this faith council start?
Just searched.
Looks like the whole thing started with (who else) Dubya. If he started it, it should've ended with him.

If not, I'd like to nominate Lewis Black as my representative. Since George Carlin isn't available. ;-)

17. i have always wondered..
when W, started this whole faith based stuff, why it ever stood, and nobody challenged it on 1st amendment grounds..it seems to me if anything we should be taxing the faith industry, and not subsidizing it!!!

2. No Muslims on the council, I see
That's not going to sit well with our growing Muslim population. The teabaggers are probably rejoicing.

Me, I'm thinking we don't really need a faith council, especially one that represents so few religious viewpoints in America.

12. you know, the sad thing is, this doesn't surprise me in the least. I knew we were in trouble in
that regard when I heard obama defend a woman's right to choose, as long as she did it "prayerfully"
I nearly spit out my coffee when I heard that.

21. unrec as gov and religion should be separate
and religion is meaningless overall. Keep religion out of politics just like corporate money out of elections.

Obama is as bad as Bush in this regard.
