Verizon challenges "net neutrality" rules
Thu Jan 20, 2011 4:34pm EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Verizon Communications is going to court to challenge U.S. telecommunications regulators' recently adopted open Internet rules.

The telecommunications company said on Thursday that it filed an appeal over the Federal Communications Commission's recent report and order on rules dealing with "net neutrality" in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Verizon said it was concerned by the FCC's assertion of broad authority to make new regulations on broadband Internet networks.

"We believe this assertion of authority goes well beyond any authority provided by Congress, and creates uncertainty for the communications industry, innovators, investors and consumers," Verizon deputy general counsel Michael Glover said in a statement.

1. Who could have predicted this... after they bamboozled FCC
into writing essentially THEIR OWN approved rules to begin with (just in case, the telecoms actually HAD to live with them) and now they are going to hedge their bet to see if they can reverse the whole process.

6. Please get informed.
The claim going around online that the rules implemented by the FCC were overly favorable to telecoms is the highest grade of bullshit. Also, this is Verizon Communications, which is not the same company as Verizon Wireless.

2. but I thought those Net Neutrality rules were written by the Devil himself?
Could it possibly be that they actually enforce Net Neutrality and that Verizon doesn't like this one bit?

How can that be? Somebody here told me Obama was selling us out with this FCC action.

3. Verizon is right
Imagine the Bush-stacked FCC deciding what you could access on the internet. That is what it would have happened, had this gone down 4 years ago.

Ultimately, we need another Telecommunications Act specifically addressing the internet - too important to leave to a 5-member panel.

9. The have a pretty good chance of winning
FCC is on very weak statutory footing on this. We need legislation before we can get true neutrality

10. I'm glad someone else gets it
the rules were crafted the way they were in order stand up to a legal challenge. But it's easier to believe that it was part of some nefarious plot by Obama

11. My understanding is
My understanding is that the Net Neutrality rules apply only to wired internet service and not to wireless services at all.

Everything is moving towards being wireless. I assume that they want be able to control the wired connections as well.

12. The FCC's claim over wired intertnet is very weak
It is effectively outside their charter. Without some new legislation, I expect to see the FCC lose in the courts.
