Georgia evolution debate goes to trial
File this one under "Oh, Lord, here we go again:"

ATLANTA - A federal judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit against a school district's practice of posting disclaimers inside science textbooks saying evolution is "a theory, not a fact."

The Cobb County schools' disclaimer, in the form of a sticker on the inside front cover of textbooks, could have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion, U.S. District Judge Clarence Cooper ruled in ordering the suit to go to trial.

1. Yippie!
I wonder if evolution can consciously be repressed. If so, it could explain the lack of intelligence exhibited by creationists.

2. In the beginning was the B52. And then God created the US Marines.
"...and all life evolved from that initial Marine landing force that liberated the Garden of Eden and planted Old Glory to fly there proudly, as a warning to terrorists and Frenchmen."

Leave no child's brain unwashed.

Sigh.

3. It's the idiotic Scopes monkey trial all over again...when will these
people stop devolving. They really should all have lobotomies because they are so terrified of thinking or feeling. Mustn't get the Big Daddy mad at us!

4. This is a force for reason
He did NOT dismiss a lawsuit against "a theory not a fact" stickers.

This is progress!

5. OK, granted...
...but I, apparently suffering from a bout of altruism, thought the Cobb County thing had been buried a while back. I'm glad the trial is going through as planned, but the fact that the stickers made it into textbooks means that more taxpayer money is going to be wasted on yet another monkey trial because of these morons. Oy!

7. But isn't it a theory? I thought it was referred to as
the Theory of Evolution?

8. Do we still live in America?
Do we really want to raise a generation of doctors and scientists who don't know jack about evolution. I live in Texas and I now send my kids to Catholic school so they can be taught evolution, scince, ciphering (you know the black arts) because the public schools in my area are required to teach evolution along with other "theories" such as Creationism.

AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH

:KICK:

9. Yes it is a theory but in science a theory is not opposite to a fact
So the stickers pose a false choice dictated by religious beliefs - therefore they are unconstirutional. A scientific theory explains the relevant facts and makes predictions based on the understanding of the facts. Actually the concept of scientific theory is superior to descriptive facts that don't do anything by themselves to advance scientific understanding.

10. EXACTLY- The Religious right purposely confuses
the electorate by tossing around the term "theory" as if it is some guess. As opposed to a scientific theory that is proven, tested, etc.. Maybe those yahoos never had a science class. Or maybe they are morons.

11. Correct!
This old science teacher was going to make the above posts. Theory and Law are confused. Some people -even science teachers I have worked with are under the impression that when you prove a theory it becomes a Law. As stated above a theory is the explanation of how and why something occurs and a law is a sequence of events that always occur in the same way. So a theory explains how a law works. So you will have the law of gravity, but several theories as to why it works. there is the law of natural selection and the theories that govern that law.

13. The creation story and OT is an epic myth and should be read that way.
Why do otherwise intelligent individuals accept the notion of epic myths for everything exept the bible?
