Fire reported at Ore. Islamic center; no injuries
Source: Associated Press

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Arson caused a fire on Sunday at an Islamic center that was the occasional place of worship for a Somali-born teen who two days ago was arrested on charges of plotting a terror attack in Portland, authorities said.

The fire at the Salman Al-Farisi Islamic Center was set early Sunday morning, said Carla Pusateri, a fire prevention officer for the Corvallis Fire Department.

She said "quite a bit of evidence" was left at the scene, which led her to believe the fire was intentionally set. No injuries have been reported.

The Islamic center was frequented by Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19-year-old held on charges of plotting to carry out a terror attack at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland on Friday.

2. I read the article,
didn't see anything in it about who or whom might have set a fire in this mosque. Do you know something or are you just speculating?

3. Well you'd have to be blind, deaf, and mentally challenged to not
be able to figure this one out. Beck, Coulter, Rushbo, Caribou Barbie, O'Devill, and Bachmann, among others, have basically been calling for violent attacks against muslims and islamic places of worship for years now.

And do you REALLY think a liberal would attack that guy's house of worship? SERIOUSLY? WE actually take freedom of religion seriously in this country, as opposed to the RW, who supports it only with respect to THEIR brand of religion.

7. several things my friend
Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 07:14 PM by sweetapogee
First, I'm a volunteer firefighter and while not as informed as you are, I do have extensive training in arson detection and investigation. In my time in the fire service, I have been involved in quite a number or arson fires, from the firefighter on the scene perspective and from the later investigation up to and including prosecution.

I have been involved in two church arsons within the last 5 years, neither one was a professional job, as most aren't, just a bunch of unhappy 20 something males looking to make a point. Just recently, Nov 18 I attended a rather large fire at a christian retreat where the place was burnt to the ground, here is a link to the local newspaper story... http://www.tnonline.com/node/152911 No one is saying that muslims or any other competing group set this arson fire or any of the other ones I've been involved in. In fact no one tried to pin the blame on any group, what everyone wanted was to find the arsonist and put an end to the fires.

But at any rate, you have no right to point the finger at anyone without any kind of proof. Arson is a serious crime and a real danger to firefighters, life and property. The insurance company will mount a rather detailed investigation and if you have any proof of someone committing arson then contact them (or the fire marshall) otherwise keep it to yourself. And finally you have a lot of damn nerve implying that I'm in any way mentally challenged when it come to this subject. I will put my fire service credentials up against yours any day of the week.

You are doing our cause no favors by blindly speculating as to a motive or pointing to suspects without proof.

PS on edit: might I remind you that someone set fire to barbie's church a few years ago and I don't remember any pukes speculating that it was members of the local mosque or what-ever shrine trying to run them out of town. In fact, if memory serves, most here were joyful on the occasion which is a shame because few fires are as dangerous to put out (from a firefighter perspective) than a church fire. We have to be better than the pukes, you disagree?

8. I think the poster was asking, not accusing
that would explain the question mark at the end of the sentence. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to attend surgical training for my job duties as a dog shelter volunteer.

5. I'd call them Hateful Fundies, or just assholes. Rednecks? Compassionate Conservatives?
I'd not broadbrush a whole religion based on the actions of 1, or some, of the assholery fundamentalists within it.

Arson at Oregon Bomb Plot Suspect's Mosque
Islamic Center Attended by Somali-Born Teen Charged in Plotting Terror Attack Burned Sunday, No Injuries Reported

(CBS/AP) Last Updated 4:53 p.m. ET

Anger over a Somali-born teen's failed plan to blow up a van full of explosives during Portland's Christmas tree lighting ceremony erupted in arson on Sunday when a fire damaged an Islamic center frequented by the suspect, authorities said.

Police don't know who started the blaze or exactly why, but they believe the Islamic center in Corvallis was targeted because terror suspect Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, occasionally worshipped there.

Yosof Wanly, the imam at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center, said he was advised by friends to take his family out of their home because of the potential threat of hate crime, and members decried the alleged arson attack. No one was injured, and the fire was contained to one room.

"We know how it is, we know some people due to ignorance are going to perceive of these things and hold most Muslims accountable," Wanly said. "We do what we can, but it's a tough situation."
