The Pentagon also reported "modest gains" in security, governance, and development in key areas.

But Taliban safe havens along the Pakistan border remained a problem, the twice-yearly briefing stated.

3. That's great
It seems that, other than losing the actual war, everything is working out well.

7. Quite so

For example, five years ago he could have rejected the Congressional Democratic consensus that Afghanistan was "the good war" that they could go all politically hawkish over, thereby showing everyone that just because they (sorta) opposed to the Iraq war, that Dems could be trusted to support at least some wars somewhere.

Alas, he did not, and so here we are, five years later, still messing about in Bush's quagmire.

8. Keep killing for defense contractor profits
...we have to have austerity and unemployment at home and death dealing abroad, all the time to keep the bankers and pentagon cronies in the money. On the outside of the cash cow war business too f..g bad, you're probably a socialist anyway. On the wrong end of snipers bullet or IED? So Sad, we are making record profits while veterans stand by the entrance ramp at the interstate with hungry, homeless signs.

9. Yeah, just like Afghanistan's mountains are just a tad "uneven."
And the unevenness shows itself most harshly as we head downhill.

11. Clearly, the folks running this war are unwilling to fight to win. Therefore,
we should get the hell out.

(Unfortunately, in order to win, you have to be willing to kill a lot of people)
