Limits on dog breeding in Missouri races to the winning vote
Source: Kansas City Star

JEFFERSON CITY | Voters narrowly approved tough new laws and limitations on Missouri dog breeders Tuesday night.

With 97.2 percent of precincts reporting, 51 percent of voters said “yes” on Proposition B, the so-called “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act,” to secure its passage. The measure will limit the number of breeding dogs allowed in a breeding operation, increase space requirements for animal enclosures and expand requirements for veterinary care.

It also creates criminal penalties for violating existing standards of care for breeding dogs. It goes into effect next November.

Dog breeding is a major agricultural industry in Missouri, with more than 1,400 licensed breeders operating — the most of any state.

3. I did not understand the farming-communities major push back against this issue.
They professed that it would lead to the downfall of all confined livestock breeders. No where, in the wording of this proposition, did it refer to any breeder other than dog breeders. I'm glad this one passed! I could not believe the onslaught of campaign propaganda put out to the opposition of this regulation.

7. Because it was put forth (so to speak) by HSUS.
Every time the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has an initiative put on the ballot that will in some little way make animals raised for food, they come out in force. Scared to death, foolishly, that somehow they're going to make everyone eat a vegan diet starting next week.

13. The Ag Industry Brought This On Themselves
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 02:00 PM by harvey007
For decades the ag industry laughed at and permitted the horrific treatment of puppies in facilities such as that shown in the video below.

Finally, these sadistic practices are being exposed and stopped.

5. this is a very important win in Missouri
I don't live in Missouri but I have donated money to their humane society. They have a horrific problem with puppy mills and animal abuse. I'm glad to know this passed. Maybe it will help rid the state of Missouri of this problem!

9. Hi!
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 11:31 AM by PJPhreak
My name is Timber and P.J was nice enough to let me use his DU Acct. to tell Ya'll about myself.

I am a 4 /12 year old Husky/Australian Shepard and a Missouri native,Have a very bad case of Doggy ADHD and get bored Very easily,as is typical for my family lineage.

I was born outside Winsor Mo. and at 6 weeks old this family took me home as they thought I would be a good match for their children, they had a nice fenced back yard too.
As I grew up I did all the things that a very active working breed will do,Chewing,Jumping up on folk, chasing Cats,Cars, and them funny lookin Rats with the furry tails that run thru all the trees here.

My family found it really hard to deal with all of my antics so as time went by I found myself spending more and more time in the backyard...by myself, very bored and having no one to play with.

One day I noticed that my family ws putting a bunch of stuff in a big truck, all day they carried stuff out of the house. Then they got in the truck and drove away.
They will be back I thought, they always have been back before.
For a long time I waited, and waited, and waited some more,my dinner dish was empty as was my water bowl and I was gittin Powerful Hungry,But they will be back.I jus know it.

Then this man in a little white truck showed up.He had this fishin ploe lookin thingy with a loop on the end,he grabbed me by my neck and drug me out of my Yard and put me in the back of thie little white truck.

The next thing I know I'm in a little Cinderblock building with a bunch of other Doggys and Cats,Some of the Cats were in these Plastic things that ya'll use to take us to the Vet,they were stacked one on top of another,us doggys were in these little cages and since it was gittin cold we jus kinda huddled in the corners.

One day this nice lady came to see us.after a bunch of snuggles and pets she went to talk with the man with the Fishin pole Thingy,he told her that since it was gittin to be Winter and that the City of Winsor Critter Shelter had no heat that if someone did'nt come and adopt us he was gonna be forced to put us Down,The lady asked him how he was gonna do this and he told her"With a .45" She Got Really Mad and left!
The very next day P.J and ScarletFyre drove up and asked the man "Do you still have Timber?" "Yes we do he said" "What will it take to get him outta here?" they asked "Ten Bucks" the man said "Good we'll take him"

They put me in the car and took me to this place called Virgil Ks.where they live and introduced me to Cosmo the Chuwameraian,Miho The Cat,The Ratsos and my bestest friend Luna a Husky/German Shepard!

I have been here for over 3 years and just want to say I really like it here, but I always wonder what happend to all those other Doggies and Kittys...There were So many of us there!

So I just wanted to say Thank all of Ya'll who got the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act passed....mabye some other Critter won't have to go thru what I did...Or Worse.

Thank Ya'll
Timber Phreak

12. message from The Humane Society of Missouri
Thank You!
Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act Passes!

You did it! Thanks to your support and YES votes, Proposition B passed in Missouri!

This monumental victory is a meaningful step toward ending puppy mill cruelty in Missouri. Dogs in commercial breeding facilities will finally receive the basic care and humane treatment they need and deserve.

The Humane Society of Missouri is exceptionally pleased with the passage of Proposition B, and we thank all of our supporters for playing a critical role in this victory for Missouri's dogs.

From this day forward, a more humane and compassionate standard of care will prevail. This is just the beginning of a better life for dogs in Missouri.
