Democrat Brown Wins California Governor's Race

WASHINGTON | Tue Nov 2, 2010 11:03pm EDT
Nov 2 (Reuters) - Democrat Jerry Brown won the governor's race in California on Tuesday over Republican and former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman, Fox News projected.

Brown served as California's governor two decades ago and won election again as the country's most populous state suffers double-digit unemployment and faces a looming budget gap. Whitman spent more than $140 million of her personal fortune on the campaign. (Reporting by Jeremy Pelofsky; Editing by Frances Kerry)

10. Jerry Brown projected winner in California governor's race
Source: The L.A. Times

With the polls now closed in California, Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown is projected to become the next governor of California, based on exit poll results. Brown, who had previously served as California's youngest governor since the 1850s, became the oldest Californian ever elected to the post Tuesday, winning a decisive victory over Republican Meg Whitman.

Brown was elected after the most expensive governor's race in California history. Whitman spent more than $160 million during her campaign, including $141.5 million of her own money, shattering national records for individual spending on a political campaign. Brown raised more than $32 million for his campaign, and labor unions and other groups spent an additional $25 million on Brown's behalf.

The former governor told voters throughout the campaign that he had the experience needed to lead the state out of its dire fiscal situation. He vowed to gather lawmakers later this month to begin tackling the state's budget deficit, which is already estimated at more than $20 billion for the next fiscal year.

Since last being elected governor in 1978, Brown has run for president twice, in 1980 and 1992, and for U.S. Senate in 1982. Brown also served as chairman of the state Democratic Party, Oakland mayor from 1996 to 2004, and the state's attorney general since 2006.

"I was born a rebel" and .... of course... "California Uber Alles"

I guess the rebel song was just because we are the CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC.

A Philippino tour guide once said to me.. "You sir, you don't carry yourself as an American. Where are you from?"

"I'm from California. Some in my country don't even accept us as Americans. That is why I carry myself different. Because we are."

27. 160 mill?

WTF?

I didn't know it was possible to spend that much money.

My wife and I on occasion have these exercises where we try to see how much we can spend. It's all hypothetical.

I think the most we've ever spent to do EVERYTHING we ever wanted was something like 20 million bucks (much of it was foundations for charities...her charities like choice, kids, the poor...and my charities like animals and the environment).

I guess we never considered running for political office.

39. Brewster's Millions
Richard Pryor's character was trying to figure out how to blow 30 million in a month with nothing to show for it.

The answer was finally to run for office on a "none of the above" platform.

But even if you "blew" the money, you technically did give a lot of people jobs

The money didn't just disappear, it paid for goods and services that people had to be employed to provide.

Think of this as Meg's little short-term jobs program. It's probably more than she would have done as governor.

61. They employ people too
Media outlets employ lots of people, and the more paying advertisements they get, the better those employees are likely to keep their jobs.

Don't forget of course the ad agencies employing people in the making of all the ads.

The bus needed to be built, and needed drivers, mechanics and cleaning people.

Republicans have families and eat too, and so do the people who clean their offices, etc.

The money doesn't just evaporate. She pumped a huge chunk of money into the local economy.

Luckily for her it was for nothing.

37. I grew up in California, but left after living there
for 44 years of my life. I left because the cost of living had become so bad, I could no longer afford to live there. All 3 of my brothers and their families also move here for the same reason. New Mexico, which has done relatively well during this bad economy. I say relatively because, no matter that I have been on unemployment for almost 2 years, I have not suffered because I could still afford to pay my bills. Unfortunately, with the outcome of tonights election in New Mexico, maybe I'll move back to California, it might be safer there.

Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 12:43 AM by pinniped
I heard on KNBR earlier that the pig was getting the victory balloons ready, regardless of the lead Brown already held.

Obviously the dumbshit was in denial. How could my 140 plus million not guarantee victory?

I read that 106 million went to her idiotic commercials alone. That's what 106 million gets you. A commercial running simultaneously on 20 channels every minute of the day for a few months straight.

48. $106m got her A LOT of people who were sick of hearing her voice for months
I think a lot of why she lost was people got burnt out on her, and her commercials were constantly nagging and finger wagging.

Plus the disgust factor with how much money she was spending.

49. The SF Chronicle had a good article the other day.
The more money the pig spent, the more negativity rating she had.

Looks like the article was correct.

When Whitman began her first major advertising blitz in March, 40 percent of state voters had a favorable view of her and 27 percent viewed her negatively. Now, after investing $142 million of her own money and raising and spending millions more, her unfavorable ratings have nearly doubled, to 51 percent, the poll found.

"That's not effective advertising," DiCamillo said. "With all that money, she's never been able to increase the number of voters who view her favorably. She didn't make the sale."

http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-10-28/news/24540149_1_three-voter-groups-meg-whitman-field-poll

Now, I just read that the POS allegedly won't concede until 75% of precincts are in. Fucking sore loser pig.

57. More good news from CA: Majority vote budget initiative passed.
(though a 2/3 to pass new fees also passed....

but maybe we can end budget gridlock. Though heck, with Dems in control of BOTH houses and Jerry as Gov, we're going to finally get some good things done.

VERY GOOD NEWS:
Prop 23 went down in flames (the one to repeal AB 32, our greenhouse gas restrictions)

MORE GOOD NEWS:

Democrats won every statewide race in CA except A.G. (flipped to Reps), and a couple of seats on the state Board of Equalization.

Gavin Newsom -- very liberal SF mayor - is the new Lt. Gov. - beat out an incumbent Rethuglican, Abel Maldonado.

Barbara Boxer beat out Carly "Cruella Deville" Fiorina to hold her Senate seat.

Why can't the rest of the country be more like California?
