Pete Wilson: Jerry Brown's breaking spirit of term-limits law
Source: Sacramento Bee

... Former Gov. Pete Wilson ... broke the silence this week in an interview with The Bee in which he insisted the momentum had returned to Whitman's campaign and accused Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown of going against the spirit of the state's 1990 term-limits law limiting governors, statewide officials and legislators to two four-year terms.

Brown can run for a third term because he served his first two gubernatorial terms before the law passed.

"He has arguably violated the spirit of a law that the voters passed handily in which they thought that even a good governor should serve only two terms," Wilson said.

Brown spokesman Sterling Clifford said Brown is simply following the terms of a voter initiative that Wilson supported.

"If Pete Wilson didn't want past governors to run, he should have supported a different term-limits law," Clifford said. "The fact is Jerry's eligible to run for governor again, and he is."

However, both politicians have not violated any laws. All they are susceptible to is criticism.

13. The Difference Is That Bloomberg Rigged That Third Term
He had the city council fix it for him even though voters had said no and there was a poll released the day after the deed was done that said NYers didn't want it. You think he didn't know? Now he says there should be term limits.

Law of momentum and inertia: Campaigns headed for hell in a handbasket tend to continue going to hell in a handbasket. Oh, that's just inertia. Momentum is a function of the mass of the bullshit and the speed of the bullshit. Enjoy the ride, Meg and Pete.

23. Well, I grew up with him as my Governor. Here's a small list of his accomplishments in the 1970s.
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 03:04 PM by 4lbs
Under Jerry Brown, California:

1.) Had a huge budget surplus of $5 billion. He did this by judicial spending and elimination of many tax breaks for already-rich corporations.

2.) Reorganized the California Arts Council, increased funding by 1300% to it, and put actual artists on the council.

3.) Repealed the "depletion allowance", which was little more than a huge tax break for the oil industry.

4.) Vetoed/opposed the death penalty while Governor.

5.) Put environmental issues at the forefront.

6.) Became a huge proponent of alternative energy. An example was the creation of the first-ever tax-incentive for installing rooftop solar panels.

7.) Had a great public education system. During his tenure as Governor, CA's school system was ranked in the top 8, instead of near dead last like it is now.

Brown also didn't want to live in the Governor's mansion and have a chauffered limo drive him around. He said they were too much of a tax burden on Californians. He instead opted for living in a modest apartment and driving himself around in a Plymouth Satellite sedan.

32. For starters, he decriminalized homosexuality.
Edited on Fri Oct-29-10 08:23 PM by David Zephyr
Californian homosexuals were no longer criminals. That single act as Governor broke the dam of sodomy laws across the nation. California, under Jerry Brown, said GLBT Californians were fine just the way they were.

I could go on, but that alone was enough for me. I have older friends in their 80's and even 90's in Palm Springs who were jailed for long periods of time for walking out of a club. I have a deceased friend who spent 6 months in the jail in Laguna Beach in the 1950's, not for behavior, but for who he was.

Loved? Hell, I adore this man.

He also put the first Latino and African American on the California Supreme Court. He created the high occupancy lanes which we still call "Diamond Lanes" here in California.

He saved our coast line.

He createed the California Conservation Corp which Clinton modeled Americorp after.

He will be both the youngest and the oldest Governor in the history of this great state.

Jerry is California.

California in order for ANY chance of being elected, after living through the times since Grey Davis, and what Republicans have done for TO the people of California.

Hopefully, Republicans in California will run out of billionaires and rich movie stars to run, sooner or later.

45. Wilson just showed HE does not understand the spirit ofr term limits.
The usual scenario is like FDR and our "esteemed" Congress--an incumbent running and getting re-elected over and over because an incumbent running for office has so many advantages over a challenger. Among these advantages are name recognition, ability to address voters more often and distributing pork and political favors.

Brown is not incumbent Gov, so he has no ability to hand out pork and favors. He has not been an incumbent Gov for 30 years, so name recognition from his days as Gov is a non-issue, as is addressing voters. If anything, Meg's ability to get name recognition and media space/time far exceeds Brown's.

Besides, if voters elect Brown, aren't they saying, in effect, "We voted for term limits, but we want to waive the limit as to Jerry Brown"?

So, mega-fail on that whole "spirit of term limits" thing.
