FedEx Corp. (FDX.N) said local authorities, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, confiscated a suspicious package at its Dubai facility that originated in Yemen.

"As an additional safety measure, FedEx has embargoed all shipments, originating from Yemen," said Maury Lane, spokesman for FedEx, the world's largest cargo airline.

The company is cooperating with authorities and referred further questions to the FBI.

Obama spokesman on suspected terrorist plot

Source: USA Today

President Obama has monitored a suspected terrorist plot since 10:35 last night, his spokesman said today.

"The President directed U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Homeland Security, to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and to determine whether these threats are a part of any additional terrorist plotting," said a statement from White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Gibbs also said, "the president has received regular updates from his national security team since he was alerted to the threat."

The full statement:

Last night, intelligence and law enforcement agencies discovered potential suspicious packages on two planes in transit to the United States. Based on close cooperation among U.S. government agencies and with our foreign allies and partners, authorities were able to identify and examine two suspicious packages, one in London and one in Dubai. Both of these packages originated from Yemen. As a result of security precautions triggered by this threat, the additional measures were taken regarding the flights at Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International Airports.

The President was notified of a potential terrorist threat on Thursday night at 10:35, by John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism. The President directed U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Homeland Security, to take steps to ensure the safety and security of the American people, and to determine whether these threats are a part of any additional terrorist plotting. The President has received regular updates from his national security team since he was alerted to the threat.

1. Well we could stop some of this stuff IF
we didn't buy our toner cartridges from overseas. After all if we made them and bought them from US manufactures we could control it, couldn't we. ANOTHER REASON TO STOP OUTSOURCING AND BUY CRAP FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

4. Good point!
Free trade is now making us vulnerable to terrorist attacks. How ironic.

3. CNN is reporting via Fran Townsend,
that this appears (emphasis on "appears")that it could be a dry run; (however it's too early to say that definitely according to another source) She also said that field tests for explosives are notoriously unreliable, and that more testing will be done in labs.

CNN is also reporting that this is an international threat, believed to be emanating from AQ in Yemen.

Former assistant director of FBI says it's not possible to test the system without actually sending explosives.

Cargo carriers are cooperating in the investigation. Fed-X has initiated an embargo on all packages from Yemen.

7. Dry run doesn't make any sense
I mean, the "test" explosives would have been found out somewhere along the line, and then that just gives the method away.

Honestly, sounds more like scare tactics to jack up the fear quotient than anything else.
