LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sen. Jim Bunning's re-election campaign issued an apology after Bunning said a potential opponent looks like one of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s sons.

Bunning made the comment about state Sen. Daniel Mongiardo during a speech at a Republican event March 20. Mongiardo will face Bunning in the November election if he wins the Democratic primary as expected.

Sen. Bunning was also the subject of some criticism for sending out a fund-raising letter ostensibly written by his 11-year-old grand son.

"We're sorry if this joke, which got a lot of laughs, offended anyone," Bunning's campaign manager, David Young, said Wednesday.

For someone who chastised Bill Clinton for a lack of morals ( in 1993 he called him "the most despicable, the most amoral, the most corrupt person I've ever seen in the presidency") this is a half-assed non-apology that makes Clinton look very contrite by comparison.

He seems to be saying, in effect, "I'm sorry if this joke that I told, which I think was really funny, bothered some people who didn't think it was funny." Note that he's not sorry for the content of the joke, nor does he say that he believes what he said to have been wrong.

Calling yourself a Christian, I am sure you adhere to the teaching of the Christian faith, whatever your denomination. Premeditatively planning to lie regarding something about which you know the truth is unfitting to an adult Christian man.

Playing the "race card" of Islam/Iraq is beneath an American Christian man who has right on his side.
