NYTHARTFORD — Displaying an aggressive style befitting his previous life as a Brooklyn prosecutor, Dannel P. Malloy, the Democratic nominee for governor of Connecticut, relentlessly attacked his Republican opponent, Thomas C. Foley, in a debate on Tuesday night over his work in private business and his positions on education, government and other crucial issues.
The one-hour debate — the first between the two to be televised — was held as polls suggested that Mr. Foley, a wealthy businessman and a former ambassador to Ireland, was gaining ground on Mr. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford.
From the outset, Mr. Malloy was clearly the more aggressive, speaking at a speed that seemed almost twice that of his opponent. He may have come across as patronizing at times, asking whether Mr. Foley knew how to use the Internet, and immodest at others, repeatedly citing his record in Stamford.
Mr. Malloy was especially animated, though, when attacking Mr. Foley’s role in restructuring the Bibb Manufacturing Company in Georgia before it went bankrupt.
