BP May Still Tap Reservoir Involved in Spill
As Cement Dries on Pipe that Caused Massive Disaster, Company Eyes "Lots of Oil and Gas" Worth Billions in Same Reserve

(CBS/AP) BP PLC says it may in the future drill in the same Gulf of Mexico oil reservoir that blew its top and caused one of the world's worst spills.

Officials said Friday at a news briefing in New Orleans that the company hasn't closed the door to tapping the reservoir again.

Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles says "there's lots of oil and gas here." He says "we're going to have to think about what to do with that at some point."

The company is plugging up the blown-out well with mud and cement and BP was waiting Friday for the cement to dry in one of the final steps of the so-called "static kill." Officials have also been drilling two relief wells in a planned effort to plug the hole from the bottom.

BP says it will abandon the blown well and the relief wells but is leaving open the option of drilling nearby.

5. Why can't its leases be REVOKED?
The leases should have contained a clause permitting the gummint to revoke them in the event of a material breach of BP's obligations of care under any of the leases.

And if there were no obligations of care, the gummint breached ITS obligations of care, to us!

9. If not BP, then someone else.
Oil is too valuable a strategic resource to be left untapped, especially as the number of prospective drilling sites with reasonable yields declines. And one oil company is no better than another (although some may be worse; see for instance some of the things Royal Dutch Shell has done in Africa). To all the people getting upset over this, I ask: what are you doing about it? The only way to reduce the likelihood of future drilling is to change your lifestyle to use less oil; continuing to do things like commute 35 miles one-way, by car, to work every day and to drive distances of less than a mile you could be walking is the behaviour that contributes to and exacerbates the demand for oil that means that there WILL be more drilling in the future, by BP or by another oil company, whether you like it or not. And if you don't like it...then act like it, because boycotting BP is going to acheive fuck-all in the larger scheme of things.

10. And the government should do what it can to block those options.
Wow, those bastards at BP have no remorse don't they? After all those TV commercials?
