Ex-Yanks, Tigers, Red Sox manager Ralph Houk dies
Source: Associated Press

(AP) – 1 hour ago

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox say former manager Ralph Houk (HOWK) has died. He was 90. Red Sox spokesman Dick Bresciani says Houk died in Winter Haven, Fla., on Wednesday afternoon. The team heard from Houk's grandson, who lives in the Boston area. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Houk spent parts of eight seasons as a backup catcher for the New York Yankees, appearing in just 91 games. But he made his mark as a manager, managing 3,157 games and winning 1,619 over 20 seasons with the Yankees, Detroit Tigers and Red Sox.

He won the World Series in 1961 and '62 with the Yankees in his first two years as a manager, and won another AL pennant the next season.

2. The 1961 Yankees.
My favorite team of all time and one of the greatest teams ever.....Mantle, Berra, Ford, Howard, Lopez, Maris, Richardson, Blanchard, The Moose, and so many more.

RIP mr Houk.

3. My first team addiction ever was the 1961 Tigers.
We won 101, you won 109. What a year. What a race. What performances. I turned 9 that summer, and I was hooked.

5. They drew huge crowds when they played each other that summer.
BTW, Al Kaline was one of my favorite players back in the day.

4. What a shame he had the Yankee stain on his great career....
In 1961 I lived 2 miles from the Ruth Farm in Sudbury...Used to go gawk at the glass case with some of the Babe's possessions. The antique (I thought) halfwit (I ask for forgiveness, different time-fucked up thinking) caretaker would point towards the fence and say "piano"

I'm ashamed to say I had no clue what he was trying to say......Today (9yrs ago actually...last time I was there) it don't look the same.

RIP Mister Hauk...The game is better for you :hatoff: :tear:
