Sony recalls thousands of Vaio laptops
Source: MSN.com

A temperature-control defect could cause a computer's shape to become distorted.

Wednesday, June 30, 2010 10:59 AM

Sony (SNE) this morning said it is recalling about 535,000 Vaio laptops around the world because of a temperature-control defect that could cause excessive heat and distort the shape of the laptop.

Overheated laptops could also cause burns to the skin, Sony said, though none have been reported so far.

The recall applies to some F- and C-series Vaio laptops sold since January, Sony said. It includes 259,000 laptops in the U.S., 103,000 in Europe, 120,000 in Asia and 52,000 in Japan.

3. The Viao I have Burnt it Moboard all to hell...
It was sitting on a shelf streaming music and 'Poof' it just quit...Thank the powers that be for extended warranties.Took it back to the store chain that it was bought from,a month later we got it back and it has run just fine,This was 4 years ago and I use it a LOT!

A cavaet...I do set it up on a small stand to elevate it a bit so it gets air moving around the bottom,a good thing for any laptop, leaving them sit flat on a surface (Like a Table,Couch or Bed) isn't a good idea no matter what the brand.Overheating isn't as uncommon as people think, especally with todays more powerful and faster lappys.

5. Link to list of affected products + firmware update to fix it
Just to save anyone else having to go around the loop to get this information ...

In rare instances, these notebook computers may overheat due to a potential malfunction of the internal temperature management system, resulting in deformation of the product's keyboard or external casing, and a potential burn hazard to consumers.

If you have one of the VPCF11 or VPCCW2 series models, Sony recommends that you download and install a firmware update specifically designed to prevent the potential overheating symptom.
