'Hands Across Sands' attracts thousands
Published: June 27, 2010 at 10:26 AM

MIAMI, June 27 (UPI) -- Some people hit the beaches in South Florida not to sunbath but to call for an end to offshore drilling as oil from the BP leak lapped the state's shores.

The Miami Herald reported groups of activists small and large Saturday added up to thousands participating in "Hands Across the Sands" to protest what one of them, Sarah Mullins, 20, of Kendall, Fla., called "the worst oil spill that has happened in my lifetime."

"This is our Miami, this is our beach, and we need to stop offshore oil drilling," she declared at South Beach.

She was among hundreds of protesters who held hands to create human chains in the sand, some chanting "No drill, no spill!"

2. What is your problem?
Some did, some didn't.
Are you trying to blame the victims for BP's crime?

3. I think he has a point...
When/if you drive your car to a beach to call for a stop to offshore oil drilling, what exactly will that accomplish? Isn't that hypocritical?

I don't see an attempt to blame the victims in all of this...just MHO

5. Point?
Your point is that if you use oil you should STFU and let BP drill and spill?

The point is that we can't trust the BP's to do it right. Sure, they say they can, but they don't. That's just the truth. Do you refute that truth?

8. You are putting words in my mouth
I never said that BP should be allowed to get away with this. They need to be prosecuted, held accountable, drawn and quartered, etc.

Until we find real solutions to our dependence on fossil fuels I think, unfortunately, that drilling is here to stay. While it is still a reality in our world we need to make sure that it is done with the utmost concern for our environment. Shortcuts were taken by BP and, in addition to being punished for it, BP and companies like it need to be watched like hawks to avoid these disasters.

To say that we should stop all drilling and to drive a car to make that statement is hypocritical, IMHO.

What is your solution to this? Would you rather the drilling just take place in another part of the world so you don't have to see the effects? Do you drive a vehicle that consumes gas?

10. Making a statement
will hopefully encourage pols to feel like they have support to push for more alt energy which I think is the point of the protest or at least one of them. They are the ones that can push for mandates for cars that get more mpg, help with r&d for electric cars etc, help by encouraging transition communities where everything one needs is within walking distance, set up infrastructure for mass transit and on and on. It is also a way to push back visually showing displeasure at the clusterfuck of mess.

12. you're right-you didn't say that BP should be allowed to get away with this

what poster #1 did do was make disparaging remarks without having any idea of IF anyone may or may not have driven to the protest from behind the comfort and anonymity of a computer screen. At least these people are doing something besides sitting comfortably behind their computers puking up smug put-downs because they had nothing worthwhile to do with their time.

11. Until mass transportation and alternative fuel
is made available, what the heck else are you to do to get around? If you are fortunate enough to live in a place with good public transportation, then there is your answer. I don't live in such a place. I don't like using oil and I try to conserve and make the most of what I have to use. I also pay money (I can't really afford) to offset our carbon footprint to

Terrapass uses the money to develop alternative fuel.

4. I did go to an event
and yes, I did get there in my gasoline powered car. The solutions aren't easy and change is not instantaneous... better we go and make a statement than stay at home and merely complain.

6. +10000000!

exactly...we can;t change the current structure instantaneously...AND we have to be as vocal ond active as we can, to make harvesting natural resources like mindless raping pillagers ILLEGAL and OVER.

we are smarter than this, there are people who develop new technologies in their backyards all the time. somehow, we need to become more open to these ideas...or we'll end up gone.

The public transportation route to the beach doesn't run on the weekend because of budget cuts.
