Obama to relieve McChrystal of command
Sources tell NBC News that the president has decided to replace him

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has decided to relieve Gen. Stanley McChrystal of his command over all U.S. military forces in Afghanistan, sources tell NBC News.

Obama is scheduled to make an official 1:30 p.m. EDT announcement about the general.

Earlier, McChrystal was seen leaving the West Wing and climbing into a van after his nearly half-hour private showdown with the president.

Summoned to Washington to explain himself, McChrystal arrived from Kabul in the early morning and met first at the Pentagon with Defense Secretary Robert Gates. After his next face-to-face, with Obama, the general was not seen returning to the White House for a scheduled Afghanistan strategy session, as had been expected. It was not known where he went, as he did not appear at his Pentagon office, either.

Even before their showdown, the White House's rebuke of the general suggested it would be hard for him to save his job.

4. The 30 minute meeting and his exclusion from the subsequent meeting was a good clue
So, I'm not surprised.

The fact that they're suggesting (CNN) he won't even return to Afghanistan to retrieve his belongs does leave me to wonder what he's to be doing next?

7. Does relieved of command keep him in the military?
I guess the question really is, could Obama had fired him from the military?

If he could and had, that would free McCrystal to run the talk show circuit and be a loose canon.

If he is still in the military, does he remain at the same rank and will it silence him?

Too many questions.

at least IMHO.

The President needs to let people know he's the boss sometimes.

Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 12:32 PM by demoleft
General Stanley McChrystal has been sacked by Barack Obama.
1.26pm ET: Fox News shows its correspondent Major Garrett checking his Blackberry and confirming that McChrystal is out and General David Petraeus gets his job as head of the coalition forces in Afghanistan.

That's the modern day media for you.

1.25pm ET: The Associated Press is reporting that a source says President Obama will name General David Petraeus to succeed McChrystal as top war commander in Afghanistan.

1.21pm ET: AP are reporting that McChrystal has been sacked by Obama.

When ever the president comes out to tell America about something everyone already has heard what he is going to say. Takes away the importance of letting HIM tell us.

31. My guess is..
If he hasn't already handed in his resignation he will be allowed to quietly do it some time in the near future. At this point I would be surprised if he was ever allowed into any kind of high level position again so he would be much better off resigning and going to work for some defense company so he can make a lot of money.

26. Credit where it is due....
I didn't think he would do this. I thought he would fall into the fake bipartisan, let republican talking heads and cable news shouters inside the beltway dictate what approach to take (ie. keeping McChrystal on).

I was wrong. He didn't. He did what should be done and he showed a fair amount of strength and wherewithal in doing so.

Good for the President. And mea culpa from me.

disgraced "once I was a SOMEBODY" personalities like Newt Gingrich and Dick Morris. I expect Gov. Sanford to be on Fox next year, along with (hopefully) deposed Michelle Bachman. Fox and Friends could get a whole lot friendlier.

42. So Obama's...
...handpicked general is a dud, and he has to turn to the guy in which he had no confidence in 2 years ago to save his bacon.

And why did Obama let things get to this point, where his general and his ambassador are fighting the inside politics of Afghanistan through places like Rolling Stone? No wonder Rahm Emanuel is making noises about leaving.
