Flotilla delays Iran sanctions vote
Source: Ynet News

Sources say US to push back UN vote by three weeks because of IDF raid on Gaza-bound flotilla

<snip>

"The UN vote on a new round of sanctions against Iran, which was scheduled for Thursday, will likely be postponed because of the IDF raid on the flotilla bound for Gaza Monday, Politico reported Wednesday.

Sources in Washington said the Obama administration would delay the vote by three weeks, and attempt to carry it off at the end of June.

The US is hoping for a consensus on the sanctions among the 15 members of the UN Security Council, and President Barack Obama spoke on the phone with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an attempt to calm tensions between Turkey, one of the non-permanent members of the council, and Israel."

"The three previous Security Council resolutions were unanimously approved, but this vote does not appear to be on the same track. Sources say 10 of the 15 states support additional sanctions, but the US is still trying to persuade Turkey, Lebanon, and Brazil among others. A majority of at least nine votes are needed for the resolution to pass."

UN Iran sanctions vote likely pushed back

<snip>

"A vote on a new UN Iran sanctions resolution will likely be pushed back due to diplomatic fallout from the Israeli raid on the Gaza aid flotilla, among other reasons, sources said Wednesday.

The Obama administration had been planning to bring a new Iran sanctions resolution to a vote at the UN Security Council on Thursday, but diplomatic sources said the vote is no longer likely to take place this week.

“I don’t see how (the vote) happens Thursday,” one Washington source who advises one Security Council member state said Wednesday.

A diplomatic source cited neutral “process” reasons for the delay – including the need to get final consensus among the 15-member body on the annexes to the resolution, which detail the specific entities that would be subject to sanctions under it.

But Turkish officials made no secret of their fury at the Israeli raid on the Gaza aid flotilla that killed four Turkish citizens early Monday, and their irritation at the Americans for their muted reaction to the incident. Turkey is among the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council."

the world is supposed to enact further sanctions against Iran because it wants to enrich uranium?

There's a fundamental disconnect behind that, it might seem.
