FoxNews.com Blocked (then restored) for Navy Personnel
Source: WebNewser

Cmdr. Danny Hernandez, a Navy spokesman, said he was unable to explain why access to Fox News' Web site had been blocked for several hours this morning, with service restored just before NoonET.

"This was not a policy issue," Hernandez said, adding that it was most likely technical in nature.

Fox News received e-mails from Navy personnel around the world complaining that they could not gain access to the site. They said they were able to view numerous other news Web sites.

When they tried to access FoxNews.com, the following message appeared: "Access to this site has been denied in accordance with Navy policy to safeguard the security posture and/or to maintain the operational integrity of the NMCI."

2. The Obama administration planted spyware to monitor freeperbaggers.
So, they had better stop going there.

6. Fox seems to have a higher viewer rating, and I always wonder why.
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 02:20 PM by vduhr
I honestly think that most people are unaware of just how biased Fox is. My brothers both vote Democrat, but when I asked each of them where they get their news, one answered Fox (that was during the election, so I warned him against watching Fox and he now says he no longer watches it), and last week the other brother said (I asked him if he watches Fox news), "I don't know, I watch whatever news that's on." So I could only assume he was unaware and he watches it.

I also wonder if Fox has a higher rating then MSNBC because Fox continue showing Beck, Hannity, etc. on the weekends, while MSNBC shows only documentaries. Wouldn't that contribute to Fox's higher viewer rating since the drooling fans of Beck and Co are on all the time?

7. They have a certain appeal....
Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 02:37 PM by Lagomorph
I don't watch any news programs, at all, but a lot of people I know watch several and they like access to the counter point that Fox provides. I hang with people my own age group, so I need to know where they're coming from. I'm in my fifties, and my peer group is a tough crowd when it comes to politics, especially the debt.

Also, headlines are headlines, no matter the source. Al Jazzera, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, BBC and CBS all cover different stories, which gives a rounded perspective as to what issues are in play and their priority to the players. Most of the people I know can only take a day or two of news each week. They want to know what the players, and the kooks, are up to.

*oops, typo

10. Most Fox viewers watch *only* Fox.
This concentrates conservative viewership in a single channel, whereas thinking people prefer to get a variety of views, thus diluting their ratings "vote".

18. I can't speak for most people.
They get some of my attention, along with the rest. Most of the people I know run around gathering tidbits from every available source and putting together their own unique perspective.

Anybody who goes to one source, sounds a little thick in the head when they dare open their mouth.

5. Ours is not to ask why.
Let's just chalk it up to it being a case of pleasantly surprising, justifiable censorship.:P

8. How could this be
justifiable censorship? Just because you don't like something it should be censored?

9. I don't think the military should watch propaganda
That goes against the policy of the Commander in Chief.

Civilian rules about First Amendment rights don't always apply in the military.

12. And of course you are one to determine what is propaganda
and what is not?

I should know better but I am still taken aback by the authoritarian streak many so call progress have. It is not your place to tell service members what they can and cannot watch.

16. "It is not your place to tell service members what they can and cannot watch."
When off-duty and on their own time, you're right. When using work computers, it's sure as hell their place to decide what sites to permit and which to deny. Any employer has that prerogative when supplying the Internet connection and computers. Besides, I'd be pissed as hell if any federally-funded agency allowed employees access to places like Stormfront or Tom Metzger's WAR. I'm not really sure, with all the teabag coverage and sponsorship, that Fox is so different from those.

24. I see a difference, but only a matter of degree.
Not a difference in substance. Remember, Stormfront cleaned itself up in response to public scrutiny, to try and look "respectable".

unless you can show me where Fox explicitly (or even implicitly) supports White supremacy and antisemitism?

Specific examples would be fine.

On The Big Story, John Gibson urged viewers to "o your duty. Make more babies," because he had found out, from a recently released report, that nearly half of all children under the age of five in the United States are minorities. Gibson added: "You know what that means? Twenty-five years and the majority of the population is Hispanic." Gibson later repeated: "To put it bluntly, we need more babies."

To be fair, I could technically go through all their Obama-related coverage for statements about blacks and other minorities, but I'd rather do other things before I die of old age.

30. No - these are all highly educated
pragmatic people - I suspect you would enjoy their company. Their concern had more to do with the possibility of official censorship - they resent any implication that they are not capable of balancing different points of view and therefore have to be "protected".

They are afraid that our fragile little minds will be warped. After all, they know whats best with their big educated non-military brains.
