US ethnic minority population to rival whites
US ethnic minority population to rival whites
By David Usborne in New York
19 March 2004

The ingredients of the melting pot that is the United States are set to change dramatically over the coming decades, according to new projections for the US Census Bureau. And the resulting broth will look a lot less white than it does today.

The new report suggests that by 2005 American whites will barely be the majority in the country, with the so-called minority groups catching up fast. Leading the race are Hispanics and Asians, which are expected to triple in size.

Today, those designated as non-Hispanic whites in the US constitute about 69 per cent of the population. Hence, everyone else by default belongs to an ethnic minority. But according to these latest figures, their share will fall to 50.1 per cent in 2005.

A striking feature of the study is the expected explosion of the Hispanic component of American society. For now, Hispanics make up about 12 per cent of the US population. But their numbers will increase dramatically by 2005 to take up 24 per cent of the pie.

3. This has been predicted since the late 1800
And in Colonial America claims that Blacks would out number whites were heard. The problem with this type of prediction is that it is based on three errors:

1. That the minorities will continue to re-produce at the same rate they are doing today which is much higher than whites. This is an error for immigrants (including blacks) have always within 1-2 generation of immigrating to the US adopted white levels of family size.

2. That the number of immigrants will continue as it has the last 20 years, the greatest period of immigration since 1920. That level is not sustainable without massive drop in wages which will NOT be tolerated (Which was the reason for restrictions on immigration starting in the 1890s and finishing in 1920).

3. That the immigrates will NOT go back home. Immigrants have always have a tendency to move back, some estimates over 50% of immigrants in the 1800s went back home, similar rates will affect the current crop of immigrants.

7. Are We Sure ?

I thought that many Hispanics voted Republican?

As an example:In the California recall didn't many Hispanics vote for the Arnold the Gropper? They were in love with Arnold. If I am remembering, they did not support Cruz Bustamonte in record numbers.

10. The GOP will never get the Hispanic vote...
when it comes down to it, the Hispanic vote is very keen on issues of class warfare and the GOP will never, ever be able to obtain their vote. Actually, it is great for the Democrats that the GOP is trying to pander to them, all it is going to do is to de-energize the extreme xenophobic base of the GOP (who will turn to a third party like the Constitution Party).

13. My impression was
that the Hispanic vote is (in general) very Catholic and very pro-military. Hispanics have the highest rate of military service and are the most decorated ethnic group on average. They won't vote for Bush in large numbers because the military in general is pissed off at him, but if a more moderate Repub came along who promised to treat the military with respect, we would not be able to count on the majority of Hispanic votes. Many of them are extremely anti-choice and would rather sit home than vote for a Dem.

So Bush won't get many Hispanic votes, but the GOP in general gets more than it should.

8. No wonder Samuel Huntington is scared of all them "darkies"
In his latest Foreign Policy magazine piece entitled "How Hispanic Immigration Threatens the United States", he details how hispanics are not assimilating and adopting the Western way of life.

I think he should just shut the fuck up.

9. umm... by next year? TYPO, read 2050 not 2005
I don't think the Hispanic-American population is going to double in the next 8 months. This is supposed to be 2050... the hint is near the end of the excerpt when it says "by the middle of the century."

15. a few things to point out.....
I'm Korean-American, and I can vouch that there are plenty of wingnuts of Asian descent, and they are perfectly at home in the GOP. My parents themselves are moderate Republicans.

There are certain particular ethnic groups in this country that are very staunchly Republican -- such as Cubans and to a lesser extent Vietnamese -- because of their home countries' bad experience with Communism. And as other posters have already noted, plenty of Hispanics are potential GOP voters.

What's more, don't assume that all of the descendants of today's Asian and Latino citizens will necessarily even be considered non-white a few decades from now. Remember, there was a time when Jews, Italians, Poles, and even Irish were essentially considered "non-white," and today Native Americans are still very much "non-white." Yet today there are plenty of white Rethugs who have ancestors from all those ethnic groups.

I would love to see America's tilt towards non-whites cause a long-term permanent shift away from the GOP as much as anyone else here, but it is absolutely not a sure thing.

16. You're Korean American? What generation
my great-grandfather, Rev. Chung Soo Lim, immigrated to Hawaii on the second ship in 1905(?)

You're right. There are the "Moonie"-types that are very staunch Republicans themselves. My family doesn't associate with their church or any of their followers.
