Tibet temperature 'highest since records began' say Chinese climatologists
Source: the guardian

The roof of the world is heating up, according to a report today that said temperatures in Tibet soared last year to the highest level since records began.

Adding to the fierce international debate about the impact of climate change on the Himalayas, the state-run China Daily noted that the average temperature in Tibet in 2009 was 5.9C, 1.5 degrees higher than "normal".

It did not define "normal", but Chinese climatologists have previously drawn comparisons with an average over several decades.

"Average temperatures recorded at 29 observatories reached record highs," Zhang Hezhen, a Lhasa resident and specialist at the regional weather bureau told the newspaper. "It's high time for all of us to take global warming seriously and think about what we can do to save the earth."

"Even though the 'godless red commies' are in bed with the Bush Family Republicon Cronies, we know that their data is lib-rul (smirk), and will do nothing to enrich me. We republicons don't do facts. Therefore, this must be horseshit. Pay no attention. Drill, baby, drill. Smirk."

4. When do we start talking about changing?
Because there are extremely important parts of this problem that are not being discussed. China tried to do it. But that's considered extreme. And it is, by our standards.

We can engineer a fraction of the change that is needed. Meanwhile, that improvement is completely obliterated by increase in not only the population, but the per capita carbon emissions world wide. So that's not the answer, unless something earth shattering comes to light. Some kind of free energy, or massive carbon sequestration.

The alternative, is one child maximum per family, and a cap on carbon emissions. A serious cap. People can't commute a half hour to work by car. Houses can't be built. Basically the entire economy would have to cease.

That is why I'm pessimistic that the carbon concentrations in the atmosphere will decrease to a level in time that will save the planet.

8. But, but it's snowing in Virgina!
The Virginia Republican Party is out with a whopper Web video today mocking the incoming massive snowstorm as "global warming."

Showing images of cars stuck in giant snow banks, ominous weather reports and a ruler showing more than a foot of the white fluffy stuff, the Virginia GOP attempts to exploit the storm for political gain.

11. China Has Some Areas
like Heilong-Jiang which are among the most rapidly warming in the world. They know, and they are very activist about long-term planning. They're not going to be put off by a couple of snowstorms.
